A Last And A Couple Of Firsts - Almost 2 Weeks Out

Recommended Posts

Tomorrow will be 2 weeks since surgery.

Yesterday was my last day of giving myself the Lovanox shots at home! Yeah!!!! I think that was the worst of it all.

I also had a couple of Firsts yesterday that really made me happy and I feel alive again...if this makes sense. I went to the movies yesterday with my son and mother in law and then we went out to a late lunch. For me, this is kind of a big thing in that before surgery I worried how much my life was going to change. I worried that things would never be 'normal' again. However, I had a glimps of what my new 'normal' will be...and I like it!

Instead of ordering a diet coke and a large popcorn, I brought a Vitamin Water with me. My son had a meal deal that included a small juice, package of gummies and a mini popcorn (that he shared with grandma). He gave me his gummies (ya gotta love him) and I ate a few. I also had a few pieces of popcorn (yes I know it's early) but everything went down just fine. After, we went to lunch where I ordered a scrambled egg. It came with hash browns and pancakes. I immediately asked for a box and wrapped up the pancakes and most of the hash browns so my hubby could snack on them after work. This is the kind of place where when you order 1 egg, it's a double so you actually get 2. So I ate about 1/4-1/3 of the eggs and 2 small fork fulls of hash browns and I was finished. Since I was wrapping food already, I added my eggs to my box and off we went. I walked out feeling happy that I had a great social day and didn't feel deprived of food. I hope this continues.

That is so encouraging to read!! :) Sounds like a win/win sort of day to me. I am apprehensive about the social aspect of my "afterlife" because of how we just live day to day. I was afraid at one point that I'd be chained to a drab food-less (celebration-less) life, but once I realized that I was more afraid of being a slave to food & diets for the rest of my life...well, let's just say stories like yours give me a boost that I'm making the right choice. :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
