Calcium Citrate Versus Calcium Carbonate For Post-Op Sleevers?

Recommended Posts

Serious question & please don't answer 'my nut' or 'my doc' said so. We have all been told to switch from carbonate to citrate after our surgeries & that we can't assimilate carbonate as well as citrate. BUT the surgery I chose was not to disrupt my G.I. tract, so if carbonate was acceptable before, what makes it different now?

I understand the need for sublingual B-12 as there is less stomach lining, but I just don't have a handle on why the citrate--not to mention I have a lot of the carbonate left from pre-sleeve, LOL!

Good question. Could it also be because there is less stomach lining? No clue i gave my Calcium carb to my 19 year old, she is super slim and needs to start taking supplements anyway.

I was told to take calcium citrate due to the fact I will be taking a ppi which inhibits the absorption of Calcium carbonate.

I was told the same thing.

same here. I was told that your stomach can no longer break down the Calcium carbonate and you will benefit from it therefor we sleevers must take the calcium citrate from now on, apparently for the rest of our lives. I find it to be a LOT more expensive here, so that is a downfall but just something that I suppose we have to deal with.

I wanted to mention too that if you haven't tried Bariatric Advantage's calcium citrate chews..they are excellent. Everything else they sell, in my opinion, isn't worth purchasing, but I enjoy their chews.

The chews have 20 calories each and they are only 250 mg each so I have to take 6 per day that equals 120 calories.

I was told years ago that Citrate was the best form of Calcium. Our bodies can absorb it easier and that was years before my sleeve.

As for the OP taking 6, that really is an awful lot. You may be wasting your money if you are eating a healthy diet.

I was told to take 6 a day as well. I like the BA caramel chews, but not so much the strawberry flavor. I do not typically get in dairy from my food post-op except from 2 shakes a day, one in the morning with soy milk and one when I go to bed with Water. NUT said we could be done with shakes when switching back to real food, but I still take them because I enjoy them.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
