Sense Of Smell And Taste

Recommended Posts

Please tell me that others have experienced diminished sense of smell and taste. I hope it's temporary because it sucks!

Actually, that is funny you state that taste and smell diminish. I just posted a thread today asking others about the opposite. Different folks do certainly have different experiences. My sense of taste and smell has become so heightened post-op that I experience all the good and bad smells and tastes in a magnified fashion. I feel so much better not having a dull set of senses and makes me feel more alive every day.

Same here Fiddleman. I had my surgery 4 days ago, am feeling brilliant and woke up with the most heightened sense of smell. Am loving it (although that does not apply to the perfume my secretary is wearing today :-)

Yes, I can confirm that it is more typical to have HEIGHTENED sense of smell and taste. Check with your doc.

My doc said it's no big deal and it will get back to normal.

I didn't have a normal recovery so I went without much food via mouth for about 60 days, most of that on IV and TPN. That's been six weeks back (discharge from hospital) and I definitely have a loss of smell and taste. I should have realized that when I started adding salsa to things...I don't normally eat much of that, but I like big flavors now. But I really realized it when I went back to drinking wine. My palate was gone when I started....red tasted like vinegar :o This is a major issue to me so I now have to practice practice practice :P Tonight I enjoyed a Malbec. I'm getting better but the subtle notes still escape me, and I used to be the queen of picking a wine apart.

Sadly that just means I have to drink more :P

I had an interesting experience 2 nights ago with drinking sugar free white tea with raspberry flavor. Lipton makes it I believe. Anyways, I have not had any post op yet. Took my first sip and, wow, the raspberry flavor was so full and fresh. It was like I picked a raspberry off the vine and ate it. This was strangely good for me because pre op I could not taste the raspberry much at all.
