More Than 3 Bites....

Recommended Posts

I'm finally at the point where I'm allowed soft, mushed foods.. meat loaf chopped really small. Smelled soooo good cooking in oven. But a little bummed when all I could eat was 3 half teaspoons. All that for 3 small bites.. Lol. I can't wait until I'm able to eat just a bit more.

I think you will hear from many that beef is particularly hard on your sleeve at first. My doc allowed beef after a short time once I was on solids - many docs have their patients wait months. Regardless of that debate, it seems that trying something a bit easier to digest might help you get in just a bit more - if you are in a mushy stage try some fish if that fits with what your doc has said. I think it will still be shocking how little you can fit, but overall it may be a better experience.

I cooked so much once I was able to eat actual food. Now I have a freezer full of leftovers because I eat so little. My grocery bill has been cut in half! Restaurant meals last me anywhere from 2-6 meals. It's one of my favorite things about the sleeve now. There are times when I know I could have a bite or two more, but I don't get the same satisfaction from food, and I stop leaving food still there on my tiny plate!

Good to know.. Thanks so much. I'm cleared for chicken as well. Hopefully I'll be able to eat at least a piece... I know it takes time, but mentally I'm still trying to wrap my head around the "3 bites & I'm full". I used to eat so much & so fast - hence the surgery! LOL.. Thanks again...

So true. I do the same thing! Cook so much. Thank God the family will eat it, but I have so much half- eaten food in the fridge. My whole meals now consist on what I used to "test" while cooking dinner pre-surgery!

Know exactly what you mean. I am at 5 1/2 weeks & just returned from a business meeting in Florida. Had a hard time eating more than 3 tbsp or at most 2 oz. I am not struggling with the volume so much as the waste. My Dad was a depression-era kid & raised us to clean our plates.

I tried ordering appetizers (like Ahi tuna) but felt bad for letting 2/3 of it go to waste. I am reminding myself that it is better wasted than waisted!

I too have a hard time not cleaning my plate. Years of programing not to waste I guess. I'm working on it!!

I am 5 weeks out and the most meat I can eat is 2 oz. It's still weird to me also to leave food in my plate. But so worth it in the end...

That's a great idea Artsong. Someone also recommended buying a baby spoon & that's what I'm going to do.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
