Best Protein Bar?

Recommended Posts

I have not been eating Protein Bars yet, but decided to give it a try for convenience. Typically I have been eating straight Protein like chicken sausage and Protein Shakes for snack. So I wandered over to my bariatric pantry to check out the offerings. There are so many different kinds! Pre-op I was mostly a caramel type person, but don't know if the same is true post-op. I want to shoot for high protein ( at least 25 g), low fat and low carb with a reasonable amount of calories. I am not sure if 250 calories is too much ( given general protein gram to calories) conversion). I try and eat very cleanly throughout the day because I am still honeymooning the sleeve at 3 months. Is there a good variety sample pack to try out some different ones.

When I use Protein bars I use Premier Nutrition Protein®. 30g Protein and 270cal.

Protein Bars shouldn't become a daily habit unless you are very active. But I do keep a few handy to keep from missing meals.

The best one out there to match your needs are the Quest bars but they average about $2 dollars a bar. Try to keep your cals under 200 and you have to watch out for the sugar alcohols in some of these. I am looking also for the same stats for a up coming trip and plan on substituting these for a meal here and there.

Have you tried Think Thin bars? 20gm Protein, 0 sugar, 8 fat, 230 calories and gluten free...they are wonderful!! I get my protein from 1 per day and milk, eggs, and cheese. Plus chicken and fish. Even after 5 mos I still cannot tolerate pork or beef... Not really a bad thing if you think about it, both are loaded with fat!! You can buy these bars online, Trader Joes, Kroger, Clarks Nutrition and many other stores. My fav is creamy Peanut Butter. Yum

Think thin bars is a great idea. I forgot about them. I used to enjoy them a couple years ago, especially the Cookies and creme flavor. I noticed that they make a smaller version for Snacks at 100 calories. Would you recommend smaller size for folks like us?

The Think Thin Bites are 0.88 oz vs the full sized bar @ 2.1 oz. They have 100 cal vs 230. And 5 gm Protein vs 20. Sometimes I do break the big bar in half and eat part at 10 am coffee break and the other in mid afternoon...so, you have to make up your own mind on that. They don't sell the bites here, so I'm sticking with the bars...

Thanks for the info!

Off to Amazon to order some. Some times I think my purchases at Amazon make their stock price go up!

Don't they have a lot of carbs?

Does anyone have an opinion on Detour Protein bars...lower sugar? I have seen them at costco but have not tried them yet.

I like the Atkins bars.

Where do all the carbs come from? And if they are sugar alcohols, why are these bad for sleevers, but not bad for people on, say, the akins diet? I am just curious about it.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
