Hiatal Hernia Repair Along With Vsg

Recommended Posts

I too had the unknown hiatal hernia. Absolutely no heartburn since surgery. I believe it caused a little more pain breathing and trying to go out of bed but that only lasted about a week and a couple days. Swallowing was a tad painful after surgery but tiny sips helped. It did not change my progress on eating. I was on puréed when I came home on day 3. Solids at 2 weeks, just had to be sure I chewed very well, as anyone should.

I developed a sinus infection w a terrible cough at day 10 and the coughing and sneezing made things a little sore but doc reassured me that it would not affect any repairs or the sleeve. 2 months out now with no problems at all, and loving this sleeve!

6 incisions for me

Starting weight: 256

Current weight: 213.6

Total loss: 42.4

I have 5 "holes" and my hernia was larger than my surgeon thought Pre-op. I was released a day early, surgery Thurs. morning. I'm in a lot of pain - it hurts to cough, forget sneezing (OMG!) I'm supposed to return to work on 10/22- the way I feel right now is that's impossible! Please someone tell me how much longer for the intense pain! Percocette takes the edge off, but I'm still so uncomfortable!

During my pre-op upper GI series I was told I had a hernia. Doctor and I haven't discussed it yet, but all that I've read said it's easy to repair at the same time as the surgery. Now I know why I have heartburn and sometimes feel like food is stuck in my esophgus!!! Yay for the sleeve! I look forward to the changes!

I had the repair with my sleeve. Surgery was 8/9 was back at work on 8/21... And even went in for a few hours before then. I was very weak but the pain was just about gone by week 2.

I had trouble getting back into things but I also got a sinus infection the week I went back to work.

You should be fine.. Just rest a lot and make sure to take your vitamins!! Start exercising as much as you can stand.. Walking helped me a lot even tho I didn't walk much bc of the infection.

Thanks Skittle! When you read posts that sleevers say they have no pain, returned to work in less than a week, etc. I feel like there must be something wrong with me! At least your post addressed my concerns about work and feeling better 2nd week. This sounds more realistic to me w/ the way I feel now. Peace!

I think it took me a good month to really get back in the swing of things. I didn't really start feeling like myself until the last couple of weeks, but my infection lasted for 6 weeks. I'm a teacher so I'm up and down a lot. If you have a desk job I think you'll bounce back fairly quickly. Just take it one day at a time.

My large hiatal hernia was discovered during my sleeve surgery. My doctor cancelled the surgery! She felt if I had the sleeve I would be back in a few years for a bypass due to reflux. Anyone else have their surgery cancer during the surgery??

I’m also a teacher! I’m in day 4 hernia and sleeve. Wondering how long it took you to go back to work

I’m the one who had sleeve aborted due to large hiatal hernia. Long story short I am now with a new surgeon who sees no problem repairing a hiatal hernia and doing a sleeve. New surgery scheduled for April 12, 2018. Wish me luck!

So question for y’all who have had the hernia repaired at the same time... was it billed differently than expected for just the sleeve alone? My insurance is going to cover the sleeve 80%, and bariatric surgery doesn’t count towards my out of pocket max. So I’ll be paying 20% with no maximum. Just wondering if the hernia repair (which counts towards my maximum) makes a difference in the amount you end up paying?

I hope that makes sense lol!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
