Recommended Posts

I have to have to a hernia repair with my sleeve. How was recovery with both surgeries? Was it more difficult to swallow or longer recovery? Did you have this repair & a you tube channel so I can follow your story. Thanks in advance

This combo is probably a lot more common then we know. I had it and to my surgeon it was no big deal. I do believe it made swallowing more difficult for me post op. General food goes down okay but medications, pill specifically, are difficult even at almost 3 months out. Doc says my issues are normal and nothing to be overly concerned about. My hope is that as time continues to pass it will be come easier.

My surgeon repaired mine at the same time and I didn't even know I had it. He actually expected it, it's so common. Of the three of is having surgery that day, two had hernias and neither of us knew. The only difference in recovery is that we had to have 15 days of clears instead of the usual 10. I don't think there was any other difference. Course I have nothing to compare it to, but my recovery was fine. I was back to work 4 days after surgery.

I had both done as well and was drinking fluids just fine the day of surgery. Just over a week out and everything has gone as smooth as it could.

I had both done at the same time. Everything went great. No problems. I'm five weeks out and still can't lift heavy thing or I feel a pull in my chest. I should get released to do more next week.

I had mine repaired during surgery as well and didn't know about it until they told me. I have had no feeling of pain or anything in that area. Zero impact on my recovery. I am glad he had to do it. I had been having pretty bad heartburn for a few years and read on this site how so many people have increased heartburn after surgery, which I was dreading. But because the hernia was repaired I no longer have ANY heartburn. That's really something to look forward to, if you have heartburn.

I had both done also, like others I didn't know I had one, I had trouble breathing for years and was told it was anxiety, now the hole is repaired I can breath normal, I was on liquids for over a month on doctors orders as he wanted me to be careful, I started having bad pain in my chest like a tight spasm I lived with it for 2 weeks, after a MRI they found it was badly inflamed after three courses of antibiotics the pain was gone and I was able to move on to soft foods, I am now 10 weeks out today and have no problems at all.

I had surgery yesterday and counted a few more incicion sites than I expected. Surgeon confirmed that I had a hiatal hernia repair. No other symptoms so far.

I was just wondering why I had more incision sites too! Mine was on the 27th and I had a hernia repair with my sleeve.

How many incisions do you have?

I also had the hernia repair. It did cause more swelling, I didn't feel any pain where it was. I have 4 incisions and then the tiny one for the drain. I'm 4 weeks out... No pain at all, 27 lbs down since surgery :)

My surgeon was also expecting to see a hernia when he went in- I only had indigestion for a few weeks prior to seeing him but he reported I had a rather large hernia and it took over an hour to repair- what was supposed to be a 60 minute operation was 130 minutes. I was not given any different instructions for it and I have 5 very neat incisions, which apparently is normal for a sleeve anyway? I have felt more tired than others report but that could also be due to other factors like calorie intake. It does seem to be very common and I'm sure you will be just fine.

Seven. I thought it was six, but there was one overlapping a tattoo. Sneaky surgeon ;-)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
