Army Wife About To Start Vsg Pathway!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I just got to call from my hospitals bariatrics coordinator on monday (best phone call of my life) she said i can now start my "pathway". I dont know if the process for wls is called pathway everywhere but it is at my hospital. I have my first appointment to get the ball rolling on oct 24th and wont sleep easy until then, IM SO EXCITED. Since i attended the seminar in late july i have been waiting by my phone and answering every call hoping it was the "okay" to start my journey. I have been reading vsg blogs and watching youtube vsg progress videos (herecomestrouble88 is a great wls channel on youtube). I have been up and down in weight since i can remember! I have lost 50 lbs since i had my baby in dec and i am at a plateau right now stuck at 219 to 224. I am 23 years old, 5'6, and 219lbs, i am looking forward to this life changing surgery and ready to finally live my life outside of my comfort zone(home). I dont have physical morbidities ..yet. but i do SUFFER anxiety from my appearance so much so that i do not leave my house and if i do i have to leave with my husband or a friend i am comfortable with. I cant wait to feel confident enough to LIVE MY LIFE!

So happy you have lost already, the surgery will be easier for you.

I doubt I have to remind you but (always a but) please consider keeping an emotional workbook, or maintaining counseling at least every other week after the surgery...the anxiety you feel is verly likey not to just go away...in a nutshell, you have been hurt enough to not be able to leave the house, and there is a possiblity this is not just weight-related...has anyone else in your family ever had agoraphobia? (I think I spelled it wrong :( it is the fear of leaving your house, or possibly a defined area...

I am in no way trying to be negative, I really want to see you be able to deal with any issues as you go, rather than hit a wall later on...

The best to you! Good luck.

I definitely agree with you, i do need help with my anxiety. After i had my baby i was depressed and my anxiety sky rocketed. I was seeing a councilor for a couple months and i was no longer feeling depressed. I think my anxiety is from some traumatic experiences i have had over the last couple years. I know a big part of the pathway is mental stability (at last at my hospital) so i am hopeful i can find the help i need before and after my surgery. Thank you! :)

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
