Advanced Directive?

Recommended Posts

Of the folks who've had this done already, has the possibility - slim as it may be - of things going wrong motivated you to do an Advanced Directive document?

I've been thinking I should take this step for some time, and now that I'm on this "journey," I'm actually motivated to get it done.

What say you?

As a health care provider I strongly urge everyone to have an advance directive and power of attorney, especially if you are facing a surgery or hospitalization!! It's always a good idea.

I absoloutly agree. It is irresponsible to not have a will, living will, & term life insurance. This is regardless of whether or not you are having surgery.

I did this the week before surgery. I made out my Power of Attorney and my Will and had both notarized and copies with me when I went to the hospital. The hospital where my surgeon performed the vsg actually had a form that I used, with only some very slight modifications for the POA. For me, working on these two documents really brought home the permanence of my decision. This wasn't like bailing out on a gym membership or giddily toying with the "concept" of taking control of my weight without the responsibility that goes with it (yo-yo dieting). This process made it very real for me and I had to take stock of my level of commitment.

I work in healthcare as well as my husband in a major hospital that has ALOT of trauma patients of all ages. I highly recommend for advanced directives and wills to be completed no matter what your age and health is.

Yep - advance directive is a must! I agree with everyone else - also in healthcare.

This.

Being a hospice nurse, I took my completed advance directive with me to the hospital. There are many patients who end up in hospice care without an advance directive because they didn't make their wishes know.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
