thinathart 197 Posted October 8, 2012 I didn't have a BMI over 40 until this past spring. I do have a lower back issue and HBP that is controlled by medication and I still got approved. I'm sending positive vibes you way that your insurance company will approve you ASAP!

I'm sending positive vibes you way that your insurance company will approve you ASAP! Thank you, thinathart.....I had back surgery in February and they discovered arthritis in both hips and my spine. I also have HBP and sleep apnea. Hoping that will be enough but if it isn't, I have pictures with dates to back up my weight. Hopefully insurance will accept that. Fingers crossed.....I should find out within a week or two.
gtracygilby 15 Posted October 8, 2012 Bariatrics just called me and told me the insurance company wouldn't accept the pictures as proof of weight. They haven't denied my case yet but it's not looking good.
gtracygilby 15 Posted October 8, 2012 Just got confirmation that I have been denied. On to the appeal process!!!
thinathart 197 Posted October 8, 2012 It's amazing what surgeons can do with the insurance companies, so I still have a good feeling you'll be getting approval in no time. Hang in there. It will happen for you. There is another forum on obesityhelp that has lots of suggestions on how to get the denials reversed. I had been reading up on that, thinking I would end up having to do that too.
thinathart 197 Posted October 8, 2012 Have you had a BMI over 35 over the last 5 years? If so, they should be able to still move forward with your other issues (bhp, arthritis and sa). Who is your provider? If you prefer to say, it's ok.
gtracygilby 15 Posted October 8, 2012 I have had a BMI over 35 for the past 5 years but it isn't on paper at the doctors office. They never weighed me. That's the only reason they denied me. We are looking into weight prior to those dates and resubmit. I have Gundersen Lutheran insurance.
thinathart 197 Posted October 8, 2012 From what I read during my journey was after a denial, there is a written appeal, if that doesn't go through, your surgeon/PCP can do a peer to peer review with your insurance company. I found many stories were an original denial was reversed and approved after both scenarios. It's my bday today, and my wish is for your insurance to approve you too!
