Endoscopy - A Little Frustrated!

Recommended Posts

A little frustrated. I had my endoscopy today and the anesthetist nurses were asking me about my medications and if I had GERD or reflux. I told them I had acid indigestion but was never diagnosed with either GERD or reflux but I take Zantac as needed. They asked if I had taken any and I said I had taken one yesterday. Then they said something about the doctor didn't have a note about doing some sort of acid test during the endoscopy but she'd ask him. Well he wanted to do that test but couldn't because of my taking Zantac yesterday. They performed the endoscopy today but I'll need to come back before surgery(nov. 6) to have another so he can do that test. I'm taking so much time off work already to have to go back for another endoscopy - plus I need to have a driver which is a little hard for me to find.

My sister has stage 4 colon cancer and has her own issues - so I won't ask her, my other sister has a job that apparently she doesn't get vacation or personal days because she tells me she can't afford to take a day off without pay - plus she lives around 1 1/2 hours away. My friend from work took me today and said not to worry she didn't mind taking me again - but I hate to ask her to do that.

Anyway - I just wanted to vent a little.

One question though - after the endoscopy did anyone have really bad acid indigestion? They removed a polyp or two from my stomach - but they did that last year and I don't remember having such bad acid indigestion. It just came on real quick. Just wondering if anyone else experienced that.

Nope - no taxi. You have to have a driver who waits while you have the procedure. I'm sure it'll all work out.

Hey, I like your friends suggestion, I say collect on any open favors right about now. You could also always pay your sister the amount she would be losing for work for the day. I know its a little awkward to pay fam, but hey, a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do. Just throwing that out there, I know you were just venting! ;-)

What is the test they want to do? H pylori? I know my dr checked for that during my egd. But my office also does some sort of oral test to also check for that. But you can't take ppi for a least a week before.

They want to do a Ph monitoring test. I haven't heard from his office yet today. I think they want to check for GERD or reflux since I've never actually been diagnosed I just take Zantac as needed. It's really mostly due to how I eat - if I eat healthy - I don't need the Zantac - if I drink too much Coke Zero and don't eat healthy I'll need to take one.

Anyway - now I'm a little worried because someone on this forum mentioned that some surgeons won't do the surgery if you have GERD or reflux.

Did anyone else have GERD or reflux before the surgery?

My surgeon at my consult said that some people that have reflux/gerd going into surgery that sometimes it can get worse after surgery. That's probably why the did your scope. To see how bad it is.

My dr called me last week ad told me from my biopsy that I have Barrett's which in the medical field is a contraindication to having sleeve. But I have found online just over a dozen people who had Barrett's prior to surgery and were still able to get sleeved. I meet with the dr tomorrow! I'm so nervous.

Good luck to you and keep us posted.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
