Question Why? Two Weeks Of Liquid Diet

Recommended Posts

I did - i sent the bariatric advisor a link to where I could buy it online for $70 with free shipping, a reputable site too. I said I'd bring the liquid diet stuff back today, and have this expressed to me and save myself $150 at least. She said there no refunds, the liquid diet must be bought from them it is non negociable and that apparently I agreed to that, when I signed my credit card receipt because it said no refunds. I told her it is a huge scam, and it makes me feel like this surgery is a huge scam - and I've lost a lot of confidence in my doctor because of it.

I wonder if the doctor is aware of his bariatric advisor's side business. I, as have all Bariatric patients, spent more physical and mental pain let alone money during our journey and to have more money needlessly drained from our pockets should not be permitted. Please speak directly to your doctor....he might be able to correct this situation and restore your faith in him. Good luck!!

This is doctors orders as far as I know, since I paid the doctors office for it, not the advisor. I'll bring it up to him after the surgery.

I'd seriously think of getting a different doctor - one who is ethical and whose concern for his patient is more important than his bank account. It's ridiculous! Call your credit card company too - they will probably be able to get you out of this. I feel bad - I wouldn't go to a place like that.

It is sort of like an oil change for your car. When you have it done at the dealer, the dealer charges extra for the oil. I started bringing my own oil to the dealer for oil and filter changes. Everyone is trying to make extra $$. Same with WLS. Our doctors are in business to make a profit. It's just reality. I am self pay and conscious of every dollar I spend. But I went ahead and paid. My surgeon makes it a condition of surgery. It's all about $$$ in the end.

They wanna shrink ur liver to work easily n there. My thought also is to give your body a taste of what's to come! You can do it....I lost 18# on that 2wk pre-op diet!

my preop diet is for 10 days and specifically says on the paper work (not to lose weight but to shrink your liver) mine isnt that bad either. im aloud one Protein yogurt, veggie and 2oz of meat (chicken or turkey) a day. the rest is Protein shakes, Water and crystal light etc. every surgeon and center is different. :) good luck in your deicison!!!! but hey congrats on your weight loss so far!!! 75 pounds is ALOT!!!!!

Your pre op diet sounds a lot like mine except I can't have any meat. Which actually hasn't been to bad at all. My surgery is scheduled for Nov. 2nd.

I've searched and can't find my answer so I'm asking WHY? Why do the doctors require two weeks of nothing but fluids? Is this to look good for the weight loss after surgery?

I'm in the possible revision boat right now...questioning everything and wondering if I just tried harder if this band would work!!! Loss of money, time at work, pain, starting all over..just makes me very sad. Banded in 2007..lost 75 lbs..needed to lose 120..gained 20lbs back since knee surgery and a problem with the band?...at least I'm having tests to see if the band is a failure or it's me. :(

Every doctor is different. I had to lose 5-10 lbs by a certain day or go on the 2 week doctor prescribed liquid replacement diet. So I lost 7 lbs and had to go on 2 days of Clear liquids before surgery (to clear my digestive track). My husband had to go on the 2 week liquid replacement diet because he couldn't lose the 10-20 lbs by his certain date. The reason is to try to shink the liver. When the liver is too large, they can't get around to do the surgery. Unfortunately, my husband cheated a couple of times and his liver did not shink as much as expected. As a result, a 2 hours procedure took 3 1/2 hours. We were lucky...the doctor could have stopped the surgery if he wanted too.

I had no pre-op diet and I know (from gallbladder surgery) that I have a fatty liver. I didn't even have a night-before colon cleanse!! It's obviously not absolutely necessary or every surgeon would require it.

I'm 2 weeks today and have had a textbook recovery! Post-op appt tomorrow to see how much I've lost.

To pre-op diet or not to pre-op diet is hotly debated here. You just have to choose a surgeon that you trust with your life and follow his/her instructions.

started my liquid pre op on Monday and couldn't stand drinking five shakes a day, so I had some real Protein - chicken in Soup - humus. I know that isn't on the plan, but I also had some tomatoes. I just can't drink five shakes a day - they make me gag

My doc requires two weeks of 3 Protein shakes plus one lean meat with salad (with a very small amount of non-fat light dressing) then three days of Clear Liquids only prior to surgery.

I'm actually doing a straight up Optifast style VLCD liquids only for two to three months in order to get some pounds off pre surgery. Honestly I've done VLCDs before and they're not hard after the first week once you go into ketosis you aren't hungry anymore. I actually think that liquids only is EASIER than throwing a meal in there... but that's just me Liquid diets are a fabulous way to lose weight... I just can never KEEP the weight off. I'm hoping with the extra tool of the sleeve, I'll be successful this time.

VNana I live in Lebanon and things are different here, to say the least. I guess the insurance doesn't pay the Dr enough so he takes cash in his hand before the surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
