Well u have lots of time! I had a 4 week liquid diet and lost 22 lbs. I weigh 260 now and surgery is tomorrow. Until u have a pre op liquid diet, focus on ur Protein and Water. Boycott bad carbs, sugars, soda and I'm sure u will drop lots of weight before ur actual pre op starts

Yeah, it's a reasonable goal. I weighed 337 in April and dropped almost 40 before surgery. Now I'm down to 260-ish, lost 40 since surgery, I expect I'll drop another 30-40 before it levels off.

My suggestion would be to lose 15+ lbs before surgery. Shoot for at least 1-2 lbs a week by working out, cutting out sugar and caffeine and reducing your carbs and overall calories. You'll be glad you did, because by the time surgery rolls around you'll be well on your way to your goal. And your recovery will be much smoother if you get in shape and lose some weight before surgery.

Here's what I always think: If I hadn't lost the 38 lbs before my surgery, I would weigh 300 now instead of 260. BIG difference. Give yourself that head start if you can.

Good luck.

I was 330, now 227, on my way to 220. My surgery was Jan. 16, 2012. I am doing exercise now that my daughter and granddaughters can't keep up with.

Preparing for surgery: follow NUT and surgeon instructions closely, exercise, don't injure yourself, but EXERCISE, get your mind around the fact that food is just a small part of your life and find out what needs to be in its formerly lofty position.

my surgery is set for December 2012. I am new to this support forum and I am nervous too. My doctor hasn't said anything about a liquid diet and all he has said is I need to lose 15-20lbs before surgery. Then again I won't see him again until I am done with my 6 family doctor visits which I have 2 more to go. I guess that will be a part of my pre-op visit. It doesn't sound like fun but I am determined to do what it takes. Also on average how long did some of you have to take off work? My doctor says he will have me back to work in a week. Just wondering...:)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
