Ultrasound Shows Enlarged Liver

Recommended Posts

doesn't say how enlarged, no s/s. Think my surgeon will just put me on a strict pre op diet? he usually only

has you stay away from carbs and sugar but this may change things...I am kind of worried now. I really need to

have this surgery and need to have it in the next month to 6 weeks due to work obligations. Anyone have a preop

ultrasound that showed enlarged liver?

A liquid pre-op diet may do the trick, the reason for it is to shrink the liver.

Good luck to you!

My Dr just does a low carb diet (under 30g total per day) for 1 month prior to surgery to shrink the liver. I only needed to liquid the day before surgery.

I do not have a date yet, just finally finished everything so they can submit to insurance. I think I will jump back on the real low carb (under 30) right now. That way maybe I will be ahead of the game.

Try to stick to Protein shakes. I liked the GNC Total Lean vanilla and strawberry, and the Carnation sugar free chocolate packets with skim--which gives me a lot of pains in the intestines now, and I can't have it. You can also have Yoplait Greek 100 calorie yogurts....don't have anyting with more than 10-15 grams sugar...and that greek yogurt is really good.

I think most of us have enlarged livers...and fatty livers, as well. You're not alone.

I planned to have my surgery June 7th, and I was on the preop diet for a week or so when the insurance denied me. We appealed and I had my surgery September 6th. That's something to consider regarding planning...the beginning of the new school year was NOT the ideal time for me. You may have to take what you can get.

I didn't find out til after I was in recovery that mine was enlarged. They did a biopsy and it can't back with stage 1 non alcohol fatty liver disease aka nash aka nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. I'm fine, losing the weight will help it keep from progressing.

it's partially hereditary for me. My grandmother had the same issue. She ended up with cirrhosis and was never overweight or drinking.

There have been recent studies that show it is related to high fructose corn Syrup. our generation are the ones who have had that crap in our foods our entire lives. So where those 50s to the elderly are the ones who are developing this disease as adults, it's happening to twenty somethings also.

So long story short, get your kids off of it. Even if they don't have weight issues. Just my opinion. But I am 27 and have Nash. It may not seen to hurt them now...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
