Milk, Or Lack There Of.

Recommended Posts

So My Surgeon isnt a huge fan of milk. He says it has to much sugar. So I was in the grocery store tonight and I saw 2 things. 1. Silk unsweetened almond milk, and silk unsweetened silk... I guess.... no flavor. Great on carbs great on sugar. Has anyone ever had either of these? What do they taste like? I've only ever had milk so i'm wondering if and how similar they might be. Also don't buy hersheys Sugar Free Chocolate Syrup. I saw it and almost died I wanted it so bad. I got home added it to some milk and ts disgusting. It is bitter, sour and just plain nasty, Avoid at all costs.

I like the unsweetened coconut and rice milks in my shakes. Pre-surgery I didn't care for either in coffee. I still used fat free half-n-half.

I was lactose intolerant for three or four months after surgery. I drank it only when needed, not as a supplement. Can't remember gagging on it so it wasn't horrid. Don't drink it anymore, so it wasn't great.

You are eating to be healthy so do what is best for you...with your surgeons blessing. Good luck in finding what works best for you.

I drink soy lattes as a treat and have always liked soy milk. I just started them with the Protein. Not as thick as the cow milk which is a major plus for me.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
