UPDATE:

Had my follow up apt with the surgeon today to discuss my EGD. He showed me the scope pictures and pathology report. He said my pipes are textbook clean with the exception of one very tiny area that was slightly inflamed but just barely noticeable.

That's where he took the biopsy and that came back positive for Barrett's. He is against doing the surgery on me if I have Barrett's due to the fact if I develop esophagus cancer down the road you need you stomach to repair it.

But our plan right now is to treat the barrett's/reflux for two-three months and then rescope to see if maybe the first test was wrong. He is sending me to a different doctor to do the second scope. He keeps saying I'm such a great candidate for the surgery but me is being very conservative and feels very strongly about this being a contraindication to the sleeve. And for that I appreciate him that much more. Even though it's going to make my process a bit longer.

He did state that he has had patients whos test first showed barretts and then later it didn't.

Thanks to everyone who has helped me on the couple threads I posted and also those that have emailed me. I truly appreciate it.

I'll see ya around.

I''m anxiously awaiting my appointment Thursday morning to find out my options after being diagnosed with barrett's last Tuesday.

After much reading and researching the past week I'm hopeful that I can still get the sleeve done but also trying to not get my hopes up. Depending on what happens Thursday I may also go for a second opinion.

Please keep me in your prayers if you think of it and pray that I can do this as I do NOT want rny.

I'm hoping that if I agree to yearly scopes and ppi for the rest of my days that I can still have it done.

Thanks to all who helped me and gave me advice and shared personal stories. I was a basket case last week as my little world came crashing down. I really thought this was the answer to my weight struggle and maybe it still is. Have to wait 3 more days :)

On a side note that egd was expensive! Thank god for insurance. I was floored at how much they billed to bcbs. An maybe my whole purpose on this journey was to find out I have Barrett's. I'm hoping it's that plus a sleeve but we shall see

Thanks again everyone!

Why not get the bypass since you have that condition? At best aren't you going to have serious acid reflux issues? It's good that you have another option for surgery. My sister in law had RNY 3 years ago and a good friend had RNY now almost 6 years ago. Both have done great. If something came up and I wasn't able to get the sleeve I would have no problem switching to RNY instead. The band though I would avoid. Good luck in whatever you decide

I get Migraines and was told that with rny you can't take NSAIDs but can with sleeve (this seems to change depending on dr). I also don't like the idea of dumping and purposely rerouting my intestines to malnurish myself. I like the sleeve because it will give me restriction that i need but allow me to still eat and hopefully not have any malabsorption issues. For me personally it just seems like the better option.

it is hard waiting. absorb all the information dr. talks to you about with Barrett's at your appt. Thursday

i remember someone last week said they had barratts, yet they had successful WLS

if your dr insists on no WLS with barretts, definitely go for a 2nd opinion

don't give up on the sleeve,

hopefully you can find a dr. to perform WLS - if it really is ok to have the sleeve with barretts

anxious to hear what happened at the dr

good luck

PS****edit here

responding to your post above- wanting the sleeve over RNY,gastric bypass - I totally agree about your reasons for the sleeve, hope things can work out so you can be sleeved

I completely understand not wanting a GBS. But if there's no other option, I would take it for myself. But I would also be seeking other doc's that might possibly do the Sleeve even if I had Barrett's. I like your reframe about finding the Barrett's disease also! You can do this, whether you end up getting the RnY or the sleeve. Hope it's the sleeve. :)

I like the sleeve better too but knowing some people who have done well years after having the bypass makes me comfortable with it. I always feel have the smallest surgery you can for the biggest effect which is how I ended up choosing the sleeve. However if for example insurance didn't cover the sleeve, I'd be okay with RNY. if anything with diabetes it does have some quicker positive effects than the sleeve.

I don't have your Migraine issues which is obviously a different situation. My point in all this is to say that worse comes to worse you still have options. What's most important is being able to lose the weight and you can still do that. Don't stress and get sick over this because it will work out.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
