Were you able to urinate before you left the hospital? How was your output?

Are you home or still in the hospital?

You could be having bladder spasms. It is important that you are able to urinate. Try to relax and give yourself a little longer on the toilet and see if you can, if you start to feel like you need to urinate and it becomes painful with a full bladder, go to the ER

Hopefully this is just temporary.

Your in my thoughts, I hope you get some relief.

One other question, are you getting in enough Fluid?

I stayed one night in the hospital and I spent most of it in the bathroom trying to pee. Every trip I literally spent 30-45 minutes, sometimes an hour because I fell asleep, on the toilet. No pain or pressure either. I've had UTIs before and I knew it wasn't that. The nurses didn't seem too concerned. It lasted like that for probably 48-60 hours post-op.

Guess that wasn't much help but at least you know you're not alone! LOL

I had the same problem for several days after surgery. I had a lot of trouble going to the bathroom. It was a scary feeling. Thank goodness it eventually got better around day 4-5.

Strong smelling urine (and dark yellow in colour) is usually caused by dehydration. However, see a Dr and have it tested! You are far better off not leaving it until other symptoms appear.

Dehydration and it doesn't take but a day or two after this surgery to get that way and dangerously so... if you have a strong smell, that could also be a result of the Vitamins you are taking since your surgery.. It could also be a sign of dehydration. You need to contact your doctor...

Needing to go but unable too is a very significant sign of dehydration.

Smelly urine is also a sign of infection. Did you have a catheter? Is your urine cloudy? It can also be a sign if pregnancy or diabetes. Get it checked out!

To OP, urinary retention is a common side effect if the anaesthetic in surgery. Hopefully it has resolved itself by now :)

Another reason urine smells is because of a lot of Protein, that is why we have to drink lots of Water....ketones makes it do that!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
