Home From Hospital! My Highlights.....

Recommended Posts

After a two hour yucky drive we made it to the hospital right around 11:30. We went into this small room and I swear 20 people were coming in and out asking me a bazillon questions. One thing I did not prepare for was my meds info!!! THey needed to know what I took last and what my doses were. Have that info with you!! THis part was really stressful for me. The anxiety, the emotion and the chaos. Not to mention my passive agressive husband who could not directly express his worry for me but instead got mad at other things and talked about work the whole way. He left before they put me out just to help alleviate the stress. I honestly don't remember much after about 1:30 (surgery was suppose to be at 1 but they were running late). NExt thing I knew I was waking up about 9:30 in a recovery room. It was a nice big private room. I had a pain along my left side and I am not sure if it was gas, or the drain tube. It was tough getting in and out of that bed with a stiff sore tummy, an IV on my right hand and a drain tube on my left side. OH, and a catheter. I think I had the catheter because I got a hysterectomy the same time as my sleeve. It seems like someone came i every hour that night to either give me a shot, take labs, take my blood pressure or something else. I got through the night and never really felt any pain, just discomfort on that one side. And boy, did I wince when they pulled that drain tube out!!! My surgeon came to see me and everyone said I was doing great having had 2 surgeries. I don't recommend going from a laying position to right out of bed. It was better to get myself upright and before my walks I sat in a chair. I got the catheter out on Saturday and did not realize I would have to call a nurse every 2 hours to use the bathroom. But it sure was nice to pee for real again!!! I had a few momentary fleeting bouts of nausea and to play it safe I asked for nausea medicine. The coughing after surgery SUCKS!! I definetely hold a pillow over my tummy and cough to try to clear it. I am a bit puffy but on my home scale I am down 4 lbs. Warm broth went down easy as did room temp Water and apple juice. The cold stuff, not so good for me. I got released around 2 and it is good to be home. My husband is getting my pain med just in case but I stopped morphine early this morning. It feels so good t not have anything hooked up to me anymore!!! Oh, and I was sooo hungry before surgery, and now nothing. Hope it stays that way for awhile! Not to much gas. Didn't pass any till I got home. But I am hearing some gurgling. :) Welcome Sleevie!!!!

Hi!! I am so glad all went well!! Two surgeries at the same time? Woozers!! Did they do both of them laporscopy? (Sp?). So now will you go on hormone replacements? Hope i'm not being too forward, its just that this may be in my future.

Please let us know if you have any questions. I remember there were a couple times my first month when I sent out an S.O.S post because i was confused about something. You can only prepare yourself ahead of time up to a point.

Take care of yourself!

Judy

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
