Starting Full Liquids Too Soon Bad Idea?

Recommended Posts

I just got sleeved Sept 25th and made it home 2 days ago. I am on a clear liquid diet and the only thing I can tolerate is nectar Protein powders, Water, and sugar free Popsicles. All broths make me nauseous. I could eat it before surgery, but the day after I couldn't anymore.

I know I should follow the surgeons strict guidelines for eating over the next few weeks, but I am worried that I am not going to get enough Protein this first week. My willpower is getting pretty shaky and if I could just make it to Tuesday, then I can have cream Soups, milk, and yogurt.

I guess the question I am asking is honestly, how soon can I start that next phase? Do I really need to wait a full week? I haven't had a problem so far with getting Water and the nectar down. I sip slowly and my medicines are staying down too. I just hate the thought of 4 more days of just that since I can't tolerate the broth.

Did anyone else start the full liquid diet a few days early and without hindering weight loss?

It would be irresponsible for anybody to advise you to progress any faster than your prescribed diet allows.

What I will say is I advanced myself early and have experienced no problems.

My surgeon had me on full liquids on the day I came home from the hospital. I had no problems. My concern for you would be if you are having problems tolerating broth how could you tolerate other things? Just a thought

My new belly is extremely sensitive. I wouldn't push it of you're struggling. I ended up back at the doc two weeks in a row for dehydration cause I couldn't get stuff down. I would advise to try to follow instructions and follow up with your doc. Hang in there it gets better. I'm 3 weeks out and I'm on a puréed diet this week. Getting to blend Beans and eat some flavor is heaven

I couldnt eat the hospital broth but as soon as they released me I went to Target and got a pre made concentrated broth by Knorr called homestyle stock beef flavored. It is so tasty and goes down so smooth. I also was worried about the lack of Protein but I found ensure clear that has 9 grams of protein. I cant have Protein Shakes so I was stoked to find a clear drink with some protein in it. In addition it has a ton of Vitamins since I cant take my chewables until 8 days after surgery.

You shouldn't be worrying about your protien the first week. I was on clears for 8 days then I am now going on two weeks full liquids. I don't think I am ready for pureed. I still have a hard time getting down shakes and Soup. Don't rush yourself, think of your healing tummy and this diet is to help it heal. You don't want to cause any harm.

Follow your doctors orders/

thank you everyone so much for the advice. My problem with broth is not that it won't stay down, the problem is I gag at the taste and smell of it. I will try that Knorr Homestyle starters though since I cook with them on occasion. Maybe it is just because my mother in law bought cheap off brand stock lol

I tried a little bit of canned tuna for dinner tonight and only got about 2 tablespoons in me before I stopped. It didn't hurt and I chewed to pureed consistency, but I know I am not ready to give up on the liquids yet. I am gonna go hunting tomorrow for some different products and do everything in my power to keep trying. If anything, going to cream Soups a few days ahead won't kill me as long as I strain it, but definitely not ready to quit and go straight to pureed.< /p>

Thanks again everyone for the support!

If it's only taste and smell that is making yo gag. Find a broth based Soup that you like, maybe progresso chicken noodle and strain it. You get the flavor but not the chunks. Once you can eat pureed food. Any soup can be pureed in the blender. I even put Panera tomatoe bisque through the blender and yummy...A cup lasted me 3 meals LOL..

broth was not my favorite but I would do the chicken and add the Unjury Protein Powder chicken flavor to it, also get some bouillon cubes and dissolve in hot Water, the tasted much better than broth. I am 2 weeks post op and still on full liquids for another week, I have had all kinds of creamy Soups strained and have been taking it slow but not had any problems. I'm looking forward to puréed next Friday!

If it falls within what you have seen others allowed, I personally would step out a little more and try something more substantial. I am one day ahead of you surgery wise but I was allowed strained cream Soups and yogurts already. I am moving on to deli meat and cottage cheese and egg on Monday. Dying to chew something. The broth sloshing around in my belly was making me ill. I actually have been eating egg drop Soup since I got out. It had more substance to it.

I was sleeved on September 26th and im still on Clear Liquids. I have low energy. Im sick of broth but i am going to strain some Soups for better flavoring. The Isopure Alpine punch is tolerable. Im going back to work tomorrow. Idk...im just ready to eat...and have more energy.

I didn't see you mention Jello. Are you allowed that? I made some homemade broth with the boxed beef broth, stew meat, dried onion Soup mix & canned tomatoes. Cooked in slow cooker for a whole day, strained the broth & froze. Nice change from what I'd been having. Tomorrow I'm straining Campbell's chicken noodle. Can't wait!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
