Really Random Question...guys Beware

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. I feel really awkward about asking this one; but here goes.

My surgery is this Monday, the 1st. Yay! And I just got my period yesterday. Boo! First, I never thought about this before. But, can I still have surgery. I'm thinking blood loss. Yikes.

Also, they have me cleaning myself with those wipes the night before and the morning of surgery. Do I need to explain more? I can't imagine not properly grooming before surgery. Any advice? Sorry.

Hello Twoplusone227

My cycle was due the day of surgery so I asked the doctor a week prior. I was told it would not matter and if it came he would still do the procedure. Luckily it came the day after surgery but you do need to ask your surgeon. Best of luck on your journey

I had mine during surgery No problems. Just call your office and let them know. You really don't lose a lot of blood during lapriscopic surgery.

This is really not an uncommon concern or occurrence. It's not a problem.

Dr will ask you to use pads rather than tampons.

Sometimes a surgery will often trigger an earlier than executed period. There should not be any problems, just make sure they are aware of it:)

Yes, I was going to suggest letting them know if you have a tampon in, just in case there are problems you don't want to get toxic shock if its accidentally left in too long. But also pads aren't great if you're getting a catheter so just check logistics.

Blood loss not really an issue but if you're normally very weak I suggest getting an Iron boost pre-surgery and look at some liquid or shot options for post op.

Other than that, in pretty sure this happens a lot :)

They won't let you use tampon during surgery. Too much risk of infection. Not a big deal they have you use pads do if you don't want the horrible hospital ones bring your own.

I have pcos and have had my period since May. 5 straight months. I had it during my surgery as well. Not to be repulsive but I also have fibroids. It made for a very uncomfortable hospital stay but the surgeon was fine with it and it didn't effect me or my recovery. True story about not being allowed tampons, bring your own pads, the hospital ones are awful.

Just tell the nurses. My hospital had thicker pads to put under me and they laid flat on the bed. They want no pads, no tampons, no underwear. Nobody blinked a odd eye when i told them. Nurse just pulled out the extra pad for the bed. No worries.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
