Flexible Spending Account (Fsa) In Mexico?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone used their flexible spending account to pay for surgery in Mexico? Any red tape or hoops to jump through? What surgeon did you use??

My account re-ups Jan. 1st and I'd like to use it for my surgery but so far my patient coordinator with Dr. Lopez hasn't got back with me about it. I hope she's researching it, and will get back with good news!

Thanks!

I used my FSA for surgery in Mexico, my FSA is on a Visa card, and they just ran it like a regular credit card. I did have to submit medical necessity and an itemized bill to my FSA insurance company, but it was no problem.

Yes, sent in the receipt and noted it is was for gastric sleeve and it was reimbursed no questions asked. I am getting ready to submit some of the travel costs as well

My doctor charged a fee to use a credit card so the FSA visa was not an option for me personally.

Thanks for the responses, I did call my plan administrator and they told me it didn't matter where I had my surgery it was a qualified expense. They did recommend for me to have a letter of medical necessity and medical records in case the IRS wanted to make sure it was. Also noted the surgery needed to be in US dollars, and the bank needed to be US based if wanted to use the visa debit card. I was so excited, and my patient coordinator confirmed it should go through, but I plan on "testing" it prior to my actual surgery with a small charge just to be 100% sure it will go through.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
