Can't Have Artificial Sweeteners

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

This is my first post. I am considering getting the sleeve, but I have a concern. I am not able to have artificial sweeteners. They give me Migraines and cluster headaches. I am concerned with the pre and post op diets. I will not be able to have sugar free drinks or food. Is this a showstopper for me? Is it possible to have small amounts of sugar?

Thank you.

Lulu

You don't have to have sweetners. You can still have a little bit of sugar, it's just recommended that you don't. Not a problem and this is a good topic to talk over with your surgeon and NUT. :)

i don't think a small amount of sugar is going to be a deal breaker, the problem is when it becomes a slippery slope. I have been trying to get away from artificial sweeteners and i have found a stevia product that I love! It is NOW Bitter Stevia non better alcohol free extract. I find no bitter taste with it and it works amazing! I sweeten my drinks with it, my yogurt, everything! I have heard that coconut sugar has a lower glycemic index and works well, but it is expensive and I have not tried it. Try a few natural sweeteners and see how you do! Good Luck!

Have you tried any of the low/non calorie natural sweeteners like Stevia? There is another one made from Monk Fruit (don't recall what's it's called. Starts with an "N.". I can't tolerate aspartame (though others I do ok with).

Good luck.

The man made chemical sweetners are not good for you and yes many have problems with them. I also recommend stevia. I've also heard of agave nectar and raw honey. Sweet but natural not as bad as refined white sugar. Good luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
