Seven7 19 Posted September 28, 2012 Just a quick question - I was sleeved last Friday 9-21-12 and am doing really great. I was back at work yesterday. Just wondering though, is it possible to get in too much Protein? I'm getting more than 65 grams a day, sometimes up to 90. I am getting all my liquids in too. Actually I'm feeling great. I was curious about the protein.

Seven7 19 Posted September 28, 2012 I hope you do too hockeymom! The first two days were the roughest, but I've had little to no pain and have felt "normal" since Tuesday. Congratulations on your surgery, I'll remember you in my prayers!
hollirrose 249 Posted September 28, 2012 90 isnt to much... There is a magic number that is to much but that should not be even close. Many people get 120ish. I get a min of 60 and anything over that is a bonus.
jentheyo 18 Posted September 28, 2012 I dont think that is bad, my NUT guidelines are 60-80. I think the more the better. what are you eating? I was sleeved on the 22nd am only getting about 67g, is so hard for me to add more. Would love to know ur meal plan.< /p>
LA_dreamer 54 Posted September 28, 2012 This is ultimately a question for your NUT but here are a few websites... http://www.cdc.gov/nutrition/everyone/basics/protein.html (Box at bottom) http://www.livestrong.com/article/507315-three-problems-associated-with-too-much-protein-intake/
Seven7 19 Posted September 28, 2012 I'm having an Isopure Protein Powder shake for Breakfast, a muscle milk light snack around 10:30, Unjury chicken flavored Protein at lunch, another muscle milk around 3:00, and thinned down Tomato Soup with Unjury unflavored protein for dinner, and another Isopure Protein Shake before bed. I'm sipping my Water (sometimes with crystal light) throughout the day. I've also had Decaf iced tea and it is very good.
Rootman 1,101 Posted September 28, 2012 I seriously doubt you can get too much, I would think the liver can only metabolise so much and the rest should be passed through as waste. I do know you can get too much via stuff like red meat and your creatinine level can get too high. But I don't think any VSG'ers are wolfing down too many steaks
COsleeveDude 273 Posted September 28, 2012 As long as you spread it out over several meals you'll have a hard time getting too much. Just don't go overboard with Protein adding additional calories unless you're doing serious workouts like strength training.
Butterthebean 8,146 Posted September 28, 2012 I believe I read previously that excessive Protein is not a problem unless your kidney function is already compromised. However if you ingest too much in one sitting it cannot be absorbed and is therefore wasted. The actual numbers on this vary wildly and also depend on the type of Protein you're ingesting. My NUT made the recommendation that I keep each meal at 30 grams or below, in order to maximize all of the protein.
It's all new 453 Posted September 28, 2012 I have heard from my NUT to watch my Protein intake and not have excessive amounts because it is hard on the kidneys - and I only have one. I was also told by my trainer, who has a masters in NUT, that when you eat more protein than your body can use it is converted to fat. I am just repeating what I have been told - I haven't researched it for myself.

And it definitely makes sense to be more cautious if you only have one kidney.

COsleeveDude 273 Posted September 29, 2012 By those guidelines I'd have to eat 230-315 grams of Protein a day. You might wanna show your math on that one. If 200 is your ideal, for example, you need to basically divide it in half before multiplying. Ex: 200/2.2 = ~90.9 x 1.5 = ~136 grams/day
