Hypothyroids & Weightloss

Recommended Posts

I agree! Usually ones with hyper are thin and always on the go. Yet I have no energy and can eat like I'm a bottomless pit. I actually changed endocrinologist bc she asked me how Id feel after surgery but not losing weight bc of the graves. So I'm glad it can be done:) thank you!

I revised diagnoses from my doctor two months ago and the first thing I did is research on hypothyroidism metabolic syndrome the second thing I did was research was VSG. Yup the VSG won! I've lost 100 plus lbs twice in my life and it's ALWAYS been a daily battle and now my thyroid. I'm so done!

Glad to here weight loss is very possible.

It is nice to hear all the positive stories of success with VSG with hypothyroidism. I really hope mine stays level throughout the process.

I am down 90 lbs since last August. I was 242 at the end of July 2012. Lost 20 lbs by day of surgery in December. Since December, I've lost another 70...not as much as many, but I will say that I have been eating more normal food for a lot longer than most and I didn't have any complications with surgery....My personal goal is 12 lbs more, but my doctor wants me to lose 22 more lbs so I can get to 23% body fat. In my whole life, I have never been at 23% body fat, so we shall see...The other thing is that the surgery has really helped me to lose the weight, but like all weight loss programs/diets, the next phase is maintenance. Having gone to a support group at the local hospital, I know it IS possible to regain weight after so many years. So, the surgery is definitely a tool that can help us get started on the weight loss journey, but it's not going to be a "magic pill." We still have our work cut out for us.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
