Pcp Doesn't Recommend Surgery

Recommended Posts

Today I asked my PCP if she is familiar with after care for someone that has had weight loss surgery...she said yes but also told me I wasn't that "big". She went on to tell me some good tips for nutrition and wrote down some good Protein powders and Vitamins. She said if I start losing weight with the pre-op diet that I should reconsider having surgery because it is dangerous and people die and they get malnutrition.

Sooo I'm kind of weirded out cause she is the first person to tell me anything like that.

She also said that she knows people that have stretched their pouch and gained back weight.

This by all means is not changing my mind, I have my date and money in place already..and support by my husband and family.

The only reason I asked her is because I'm going to Mexico for my surgery and I need a Dr. to help if I need it.

Feedback/comments?

I guess I'm nervous now and I have been confident up until today. Thanks.

Each medical professional has their own opinions. My PCP told me he would do follow ups after I told him I was going to Mexico, and then he referred me to Kaiser's bariatric program. If he wasn't supportive, I would have went to a different PCP that was. That's how set I was on getting this surgery. :) This is the best decision I have ever made. :)

My first PCP told me I was lazy and should go and do Medifast; that the meetings were held in his office on Tues. nights. I told him I know how to lose weight, just can't keep it off. Needless to say, I got me a new PCP.

Wow! This sounds jut like my story! PCP would not recommend it. She is an overweight woman who preaches 'fat acceptabce'. She basically told me I was not to be fat and would likely remain that way even after surgery.

I had surgery in Mexico 4 weeks ago. I have not seen that PCP since and really don't plan to. I'm switching insurance at the end I the year and hope I have no reason to be seen by her before that happens. I am retiring to MX for a 30 month follow up visit.

I asked around here for PCP recommendations in my area. I know there are other VSt folks that live near me, including one user who is pretty far out and at goal. He totally blew me off! So, as much as I'd love to find a Dr who is experienced in VSG after care, I guess I'll just hope I get lucky with whoever Kaiser assigns me to next year.

I would look for a new doc if I were you. It sounds like yours isn't even filial with VSG if she is telling you your "pouch can stretch".

It sounds like your doctor is referring to Gastric Bypass and not the sleeve. Very difficult to get malnutrition with the sleeve, and even more difficult to stretch. And the mortality rate for VGS is about the same as knee surgery.

Some doctors are just not very up to date on every possible medical issue....who possibly could be?
