Experienced Sleevers, I Need To Know...

Recommended Posts

So I am two months out, and I have to say that most days I just don't feel normal. Eating is hard, drinking is hard, and I have really bad heartburn at night. Now I know that your sleeve takes three months to heal, or around that time, but I want to know from people who have gone through this, not a doctor's perspective! So, when did you start feeling normal? How long did it take? When was the day where you realized you forgot you had surgery, or didn't have any side effects? I would lie and say if I wasn't getting discouraged, by the way I feel from day to day. I want to be able to eat, and drink without wanting to throw up! And I'm following all the rules, eating slow, no more than two ounces, waiting 30 minutes between meals to drink. I just want to make sure everyone knows that my symptoms aren't a result of poor eating habits or something of that nature. I mean even when working out, I often feel sick to my stomach and light headed. Please tell me someone out there has experienced this, and no longer has any of these symptoms. Thanks!

I'm headed towards 2 years post-op. It took me over 2 months to get back to the point that I didn't frrl crappy. Between the heartburn, nausea and general malaise I was tired and could not sleep. I never really had any pain, just felt like crap. After 2 months I started to feel better and after about 5 months I started to exercise which really started to improve my feelings. About 6 months out I could eat pretty well and after 1 year I could eat anything I want, just not much of it.

Wow, I'm so sorry to hear that you guys are feeling this way. I had my surgery 8/9/12. I had nausea one time but it subsided after I took the anti nausea medication and it's never come back. I feel pretty darn good except sometimes I'm a little tired. I can eat just about whatever I want. I choose not to eat bread, Pasta, rice, corn or potatoes. I eat about 4 to 5 ounces at each meal and 2 or 3 Snacks a day. My Snacks are never over 100 calories. I don't drink anything unless it's Water, skim milk or artificially sweetened. I have a hard time with the shakes also but sometimes I drink an EAS shake 100 cal 17 grams of Protein. It's not to bad, it's not thick and it's something I turn to when I need more Protein for the day, it's also pre made in like juice box. I do have a hard time getting all my Water in and to be honest I've gotten in the 64 oz on 3 occasions. I usually get about 5o oz in. I need to work harder at that.

What types of food are you eating and do you take something to reduce the acid in your stomach?

I hope you both start to feel better, good luck!

I'm a month out and I have days like that. I get bad acid attacks and take priloc and Zantac almost every day! I also take my zofran every other day. It's worse when I'm dehydrated but struggle every day to get my 48oz in. If I don't drink all day long consistantly I fall behind. My month apt with the dietician is Monday and next Friday with the doctor. I guess I will find out how dehydrated I am then. Luckly I work in a hospital so I may just have someone put an iv in me so I can give my self some fluids

So I am just over 4 months out and I am feeling pretty normal. I can eat a little bit more, I can have raw veggies, i work out pretty hard. My surgeon told me not to drink for a year, but whatevs, I drink occasionally on the weekends with no problems. I have learned to just share a small appetizer if I go out to eat or get a cup of Soup. I am not just eating tablespoons of mushy junk. I am eating real food. I think you just need to hang in there, I am already getting used to how much I can eat. If I eat too fast or too much I get a tightness in my chest or have to burp alot, but that is easily avoided by just knowing my limits and sticking to it. Keep positive, because month four is good. :)

I was so tired till closer to 5 months out. I was very sensitive to greasy foods, acidic foods, and spicy foods till 6-8 months out. Things are still a bit different but in a good way, At almost 18 months out, I feel I can eat a healthy meal including veggies, whole grains, and Protein. I can enjoy junk food or alcoholic drinks when I want and, in fact, I have to monitor their intake to keep my weight stabile. I finally have more energy than I did pre-op. It's amazing how losing more than 100 lbs. can free your movements!

Keep an eye on things. If you are feeling worse instead of better, time to call the Dr.!

Best wishes on your journey to the goalies bench!

A little over 2 months out. Have had nausea from the start. My doc has been very responsive. Gave me suppositories right from the beginning. Foolishly I hoaded them and took only one a day. Didn't know I would get more. Suffered most of the day. Told doc how discouraged I was. He has no problem prescribing 30 at a time. They only cost around $15. Told me this is the most common side affect and that it needs to be treated for as long as it lasts. I was so relieved that he took it seriously and I feel so much beter. Keep calling your doc and tell them the over the counter stuff doesn't work. You don't need to suffer. You can't be successful if you can't eat or drink. WE'RE ALL DIFFERENT.

I have not had any side affects from the suppositories. The side affects of not getting your Protein or fluids are disasterous.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
