Should I Be Concerned

Recommended Posts

I had my consultation with my Dr yesterday and told me that I didn't have to go on a pre-op diet. He only asked that I have no food or drink after 10pm the night before my surgery. I don't know if I should feel lucky or concerned. Every bit of research I have done on this procedure says that I go on a 2 week liquid diet before surgery. The Dr. also said that he has done enough of these that he doesn't ask his patients to do the diet. What’s your opinion?

I only had to do one day of liquid diet before surgery so I'm not surprised by this.

Maybe it depends on how overweight you are... my doctor said they have us do it to shrink the liver to make it easier for the laproscopic surgery... ask your docter if you CAN go on the pre-op diet if you are more comfortable with it... I'm on day 10 of my pre-op diet... no problems...just boring ;)

I did a 3 day clear liquid diet before..I think sometimes people are asked to go on a Pre Op diet because the heavier you are, the more your liver may be inflammed due to fat deposits. This could make it harder to find landmarks for surgery...

If you are concerned Google clear liquid diets and put yourself on one for a day or two...It won't hurt you if that's what you decide to do...

I have already done 5 days pre-op liquids...and then I was bumped to Nov.6... :( So now I have to wait until Oct. 23 to start again...oh goodie.......

NO one is going to stop you from doing a pre-op diet if that is what you wish...if it makes you feel better do it! Won't hurt....

Wow,

Did he say he was going of of any sound research? This diet is good for many reasons, one big one is that you will lose alot of weight on the liquid pre op, your hormones will fluctuate quite a bit - you release alot of estrogen when you lose alot of weight. You will go into ketosis while doing this, and you body will be doing all of this before the surgery, so you won't just wake upand BAM on top of the anest., recovery, possible complications, etc. you will be dealing with all of this too. Plus, if for two weeks you cannot follow a heavily restricted diet, you really need to ask yourself if you are ready - heck yes everyone is ready to lose weight - I mean are you ready for the "forever" part...

I didn't have a pre op diet either. I had nothing by mouth after midnight the night before. Because I was nervous, I stopped eating solids three days before and on the day before, stuck to Clear Liquids but that was my own doing.

It just boggles my mind how different the pre-op diets are depending on the doctor, you'd think there was a "standard" across the board. I agree with the comment above as far as why the pre-op diet is necessary. My surgeon and the bariatric nurse told me it's because the want the fatty deposits around your liver to shrink up so it makes it easier for them to manuver around your organs to do the surgery. Plus, I was told it really helps not only with the surgery itself, but also the recovery and adjusting to your post-op diet. Although, I've been told that afterwards your tastes completely change and it's really tough just to get in your daily requirements of the clear liquids. It certainly won't hurt you any to go on a 10 day liquid diet before hand, if you wish, but I guess we unfortunately are left to just trust that what our dr/surgeon is telling us is the correct thing to do.

I had my mind already thinking that I would have to do a two week liquid diet. I am going to go ahead with it. I think it will be better for myself to be ready for it coming out of surgery.

He did say if I was heavier than I would have to go on a liquid before hand. Who would off thought a 377 lb male isn't heavy enough to have to do a pre-op diet.

thanks for your input.

One wonderful thing about the pre-op liquid diet is that it detoxifies your body.......gets you through the crunch of giving up sugar, salt, fat and caffeine........your body will take a hissey fit while you are doing this the first week....but they tell me week 2 is much easier and you feel so small.....! lost 10 lbs....those 5 days I was on it...and it made me feel like I was so in control of it all........:)

All the best...seems to me your ahead of the game by deciding to make it easier on yourself after the surgery......

I only had to do 3 day pre op diet of yogurt and water... but I know a bunch of people with doctors here in California who were told to eat normally (but try for less fatty diet) and then nothing after midnight the night before surgery. Honestly it's prob a good thing to do a longer pre op diet.. but I am a nurse and none of my patients have a pre op diet before they have their gallbladder out or hernia repair or back surgery or brain surgery or colostomy or liver surgery etc etc etc. (just my observation, not medical advice) It's nice to shrink your liver but I would say go with your doctor recommendations and you can always just do a liquid pre op diet ahead of time if it makes you feel more comfortable ;)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
