So I was told to never drink diet soda again. At first I thought that would be no big deal but as it turns out I would like one now and again.

So, can anybody tell me what the problem is with drinking some diet soda once in awhile?

Someone told me that carbonated beverages of any kind are not allowed....and it was because it can stretch your stomach??!!

Hmm.....

I had surgery in Mexico and do not have a NUT...so if anybody can shed some light on this I would sure appreciate it.

Thanks!

I was told that it is because it can stretch your stomach and cause gas pains post op. I know I had some gas pains from something else entirely that made me want to die. So for me anyway, I am happy to leave soda alone and I used to be completely addicted to diet coke.

For me, the decision to stay away from soda was that I recognized it as a trigger to want more sweets, or want the foods that I should not have. I burp excessively as is, and sometimes cannot burp when I need to so adding carbination to y tummy seemed potentially a very bad idea.

There is usually a high amount of sodium.

One more thing...carbonation occurs after introducing carbonic acid to a aquaious solution, or introduction of carbon dioxide, creating the carbonic acid, so it is a lower ph drink, meaning it is more acidic and definately potentially damaging to your tummy.

My doctor only put a 2 month restriction on sodas. When I tried have me beloved coke zero again, it doesn't taste the same, so I'm still not drinking sodas.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
