Everyone is different...my Dr also said I can have anything I want, just in moderation & what my tummy will tolerate. "Don't deny yourself" is what he said... So far, it has worked!!! I have had a bite or three of everything I used to like, except red meat (didn't really agree with me before.

I'll miss my morning coffee. I'm not sure I'm going to give it up long term although my NUT says to. Who knows I may change my mind after going without it for a period of time.

I drink coffee without sugar and 2 oz of milk...I am allowed to have it...weird

is the coffee thing just because of how acidic it is? If thats the case I would imagine at some point your stomach will be able to handle it again, would you think so? I mean like once the wound is completely healed. IDK I'm no nutritionist, or is it the caffeine? If thats the case could you still drink it so long as it was Decaf? I don't think potato's will be out of my diet forever, I suspect I may have a bite or two of them at holiday meals (I mean c'mon who is going to eat a christmas salad instead of a christmas ham? lol) but it will definitely be in moderation!!!!

I'm almost 18 months out and can eat pretty much anything I ate pre-op, just in smaller amounts. Some people, including the woman who writes the eggface blog, decide to give up a problematic food instead of trying to eat smaller amounts of it. Kind of like an alcoholic gives up drinking alcohol instead of trying to control something they know they can't control. That decision rests with each individual. I am grateful that I haven't ran across a food I felt the need to give up yet. I love my life on the goalies' bench!

I do eat differently now. Here are a few examples:

  • Night time salty snack: pretzels. I am pretty satisfied with a one-ounce portion.
  • Popcorn: Try not to eat more than a couple of times per month.
  • Hamburger: Generally, I make sliders at home. 4 oz. raw hamburger, formed into three small patties. I take two Kings Hawaiin Rolls and split them horizontally into third to make three Buns. I use a little light mayo on the top bun.
  • Chili Dogs: I like the Hebrew National Light Hot Dogs, 97% fat free beef chili, the light shredded cheddar cheese, some chopped onion, and don't eat much bun. Sometimes no bun.
  • Sweets: I do indulge in sweets, but mostly try to stick to something light. I enjoy graham crackers with a little Peanut Butter or Quaker granola bars. The 90 calorie Fiber One brownies are good too. Sometimes i have soy milk heated with a splash of sugar free Syrup. I also like the sugar free hot apple cider mix.

Best wishes on your journey!

Lynda

I'm getting sleeved on the 25th. Things I will miss, in no particular order:

Beer

Diet Coke

Regular Coke

Beer

Pepsi

Beer

Diet Pepsi

Hmmmm.... am I forgetting anything? Oh yeah: BEER!

P.S. Sorry for invading the powder Room ladies... but if it's any consolation, you are all always welcome in the Man Room ;)

P.S. #2: no I'm not an alcoholic, in case you're wondering. I actually don't drink a lot, usually just when watching football or out with the guys

I'll miss donuts! I love them and not in a casual way; in a Homer Simpson "Mmmmm donuts!" kind if way.

And they love me back...so much so that they stay attached to my behind! LOL

I'll also miss red meat. I'm a Texas Girl and truly enjoy a great cut of beef cooked medium rare.

And I'll miss my mom's red velvet cake.

For me, I had to get to a place where I accepted that I may never be able to have the things I "love" post-surgery. I can't have some foods in moderation or just as a treat. I had to break up with some foods!

You know, I am almost 3 1/2 years out here, and that's a question I should be able to answer. I don't drink beer though. I've never liked it. I have a lot of sleeved friends, and none of them like beer either.

if I had to guess, I would say it would be something that would be sort of hard to drink. The carbonation would make you feel full really fast. If you drank it slowly, I am sure it would work once you're cleared for alcohol. It's pretty much like soda though. Doctors will say carbonation will stretch the sleeve.

You do get pretty drunk easily once you're sleeved though. The alcohol gets into your blood stream sooner.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
