ShrinkyDinkMe22 376 Posted September 27, 2012 I have Barrett's and my doc was pushing hard for a bypass. I have no interest' date=' so my doc agreed to the sleeve if I come back every year to be scoped. if my reflux gets worse, he will convert the sleeve to a bypass when needed. Hopefully the hernia repair and weight loss help resolve my reflux and Barrett's... Maybe this strategy will work for you too![/quote'] Thanks thats good to hear and gives me some hope. I don't want bypass either. Have you had your sleeve done and if so how has the reflux been?

JuliannaJ 83 Posted September 28, 2012 I thought for sure this had to be a mistake...why would Barrett's be a contraindication to surgery...but yes sure enough it is...I tried to research WHY but any studies I saw did not say WHY. Does anyone know? I am thinking that maybe because the VGS can cause refux in about 20% of patients? I have Barrett's esophagitis and I am wondering why the surgeon at my first appointment didn't tell me that this is an issue? At that time I was leading toward Lapband. I am afraid I am going to jump through all of these hoops (nutritionist, psych, support groups, testing etc.) only to be told no. I have a follow up with the surgeon in about a week so I will ask him. But does anyone know why it is a contraindication?
ShrinkyDinkMe22 376 Posted September 28, 2012 From what i have been readin (i still have not mwt with my surgeon to discuss what to do). But what I have gathered is Barrett's is a precancerous condition caused by excessive reflux. If you are that 20% whose reflux gets worse after vsg and makes the reflux makes Barrett's condition turn into dysphasia and they have to remove part of your esophagus. From what I have been reading is they can't after vsg. Like I said I haven't talked to my surgeon about this since I got te phone call. I see him a week from today. I can report back after. There are some people on here who I have spoke to who have Barrett's and still got vsg.
