I changed surgeons because he was pushy and insisted on the RNY Bypass. After much research and talk, I decided that I could not live with the side effects of the bypass. The dumping in particular. Research does not support their assertion about the weight loss.

I changed surgeons, continued down the VSG and here I am, 9 days post op and feeling great.

When I went to my pre-op orientation, I was the only person in the room that was not having the bypass. The other surgeon pushes that procedure. My surgeon spent almost an hour talking to me in the initial visit explaining the surgeries and answering my questions. If you haven't seen the surgeon yet, I would suggest moving on.

GET A SECOND OPINION, and find a surgeon you can trust!

No Regrets and good luck, BopPop

I originally wanted to do the lap band. My surgeon,PA, psych, nut all were against it. They were pushing so hard with the bypass. I am determined(still) that I will not let them sway me. I understand everything they say...so I really did a lot of research and I am doing the sleeve. But my Dr. said he DID NOT want to do the band. I say do what ai tell ya!

Good luck to you

Thats frustrating SassySleever' date=' I wont even meet my surgeon until right before surgery. That doesnt seem normal? but I dont know. I do know they are busy because him and his partner have done over 6,000 weightloss surgery procedures combined. I guess thats why he has P.A.'s do everything![/quote']

But is it a Bariatric Center of Excellence? I flat refuse to see a PA since I went to my first appt with my pcp and the pa flat refused to consider surgery an option for me. She said my ins did not cover it and that was it. She was wrong. They did cover it at 100%. I scheduled another appt and insisted on seeing the MD. Then I researched the available surgeons in my area to find the Center of Excellence and contacted them directly to see if I had coverage. The PA won't be the one doing your surgery either so why should she feel compelled to advise you on what is best for you in that regard. My surgeon discussed BMI with me at the first appt and stated he had performed the sleeve on many patients with a 50+ BMI. Mine was 41 when I started. It is now at 33 two months out. He almost always recommends the sleeve over RNY because of the obvious benefits. Goood luck to you! Don't be afraid to find another surgeon. Remember, they work for YOU not the other way around.

This is a center of excellence! And only place I can go. I like the surgeon but they think I will have better results. The last appt I told him straight out " you can stop asking me as my answer will not change" . He hasn't asked again ;)

Im not sure besides the fact they think its not effective on people with BMI's over 40. SO discouraging:( Thanks for the response!

I am shocked to hear of your experience. Sounds tough. Surgeons are so different. I am 5'5" recently made it under 300- currently 298. My surgeons office thinks sleeve is superior. The benefits are about the same as bypass. You know what's best for you!!! :). Maybe another surgeon?

Nope, its the only center my insurance will allow. It takes me a hour each way. I will see what happens when I go back in Dec. I think I have set things straight after my last appt :)

And congrats!!! I am looking forward to being under 300.

My mom & aunt both had the bypass and regret it everyday. They both look like the walking dead and have to take like 25 Vitamins a day because they cannot get the nutrients from food because their stomachs are bypassed. I had the sleeve (my bmi was 44) and I recommend it to everyone. It was the best thing I've ever done. My surgeon doesn't like doing bypasses because how rough they are on the body.

I have a consult with a surgeon a few weeks back and I didn't like the fact he kept saying you can do whatever you wanted to do. Now do t get me wrong he was very informative and answered all my questions. Adding the fact that my first appointment was a waist of time and money $45 co-pay. He didn't really do anything other then tell me what I had to do and sent me in my marry way. My current surgeon first made me go to a information seminar which was free then I have a consult with him on Friday. During the seminar I asked if I could pick what I wanted and his answer was..... He has to speak to you one on one and find what best suites my needs. Knowing that he takes the time to make sure im making the right life altering choice make me feel so much better. It sucks that I wasted 2 months waiting for the other appointment and finding a new surgeon but at the end I the day my life is going to be in someone else's hands and being comfortable should be step one to this long process.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
