Anyone Have Anxiety Prior To Their Decision To Have Vsg?

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering if anyone who has had the VSG suffered from anxiety prior to their decision to have surgery and if so did this improve after you had the surgery and lost some of the weight?

I am scheduled for surgery on October 3rd and I am very anxious! Hoping that my nerves calm down or else I will be having them give me the "happy juice" as soon as I cruise into the hospital... :) I think it is pretty normal.

I don't have my surgery date yet, but, yes, I am anxious. The permanence kind of freaks me out. I'm with UTGal99 - happy juice on arrival to the hospital! I can't imagine anyone goes into this without anxiety!

I mean anxiety on a daily basis, like diagnosed by a doc. Of course some level of anxiety is to be expected in anyone contemplating the surgery. I have read that people with depression of find their depression subsides once they had the surgery and lost the weight BUT I myself have diagnosed anxiety and I was curious if it could possibly get better after I have the surgery. My doc says I'm not the first person with anxiety to have this surgery and she's sure I wont be the last. I was just wanting to network with others in a situation like mine....hopefully someone who has already had the surgery and can tell me what their experience was like.

I'm afraid I haven't had the surgery yet myself, hopefully will be before Xmas!

I am also a sufferer of general anxiety/depression, I would imagine once surgery is completed, weight starts to drop and confidence starts to rocket which hopefully in turn will aid the anxiety/depression!!! Fingers crossed anyway! Lol x

Today I had my EGD done and let me tell as soon as I got too the hospital I got very anxious about getting the sleeve. The prepping for the EGD was as If I was going to have surgery. I told myself ," omg I'm really doing this." My surgery is on Oct 2' only got a week left.

I think my biggest fear of demise is leaving my 3 fairly small children behind (I have a set of 6y/o twins and a 3y/o daughter).

I had a lot more anxiety in the months leading up to surgery. As I was completing my insurance requirements, I thought I would drive myself nuts. It all changed after I got a date and started my pre-op diet. Suddenly, I had something to focus on for surgery.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
