Tell Me About Your Post Op Care?

Recommended Posts

I am one week out of vsg. I was sleeved in Texas, I don't think I will have any more contact with the doctors office/surgeon that did my procedure. I say this because on discharge they said "call us if you have a problem" and I haven't heard from them since. I was never told to call and schedule a follow up in a month or 6 weeks or anything. Since I have been home I haven't heard a word from them. I guess I'm just done pending any other issues. I am curious what your aftercare is like?

Thanks!

My aftercare is pretty intense. I had a three day stay in the hospital (without complications). I am on liquids for three weeks. I have an appointment for scar review, next week. I meet with my surgeon a week after that for another esophogram and clearance to move onto mushies. After that, I will have to visit my Bariatric Surgeon's office at two, three, six, nine and twelve months for review of progress, etc.

My surgery was at NYU Langone Medical Center. Dr. Christine Ren-Fielding is my surgeon.

I go back week 1, week 2, week 4, month 3, month 9 and 1 year. I know at the 3 month check up he is going to to blood work to check my Vitamin levels. I think you need to call and find out!!!

Wow I had my two week and four week appointments scheduled prior to surgery. Then after the month I will go back every 6 weeks until 1 year out. It's sad that your doctor did not do any scheduling for you prior to surgery. I would say give them a call to find out why this was done..

I was also sleeved 9/17 , however I did/do not have post op appointments scheduled , When I was released the DR gave me instructions to call the office and make an appointment for Thursday ( 10 days post op ) for check up and I guess we will go from there .... However as everyone else stated , call to verify

I was sleeved on the 17th as well and I received the same instructions. I have an office visit on Thursday the 27th and my surgeon told me that he will be seeing me monthly for at least the next year.

I was sleeved at Kaiser Fremont. I saw the surgeon at two weeks and six weeks. I saw the medical doctor associated with the bariatrics group and a nutritionist at three months during a group appt. I saw the nutritionist and the medical doctor associated with the bariatrics group for individual appts at six months and one year. I also had extensive blood work tests at six months and one year. I will see them once per year for the rest of my life.

I've been very happy with Kaiser's bariatric program. I feel they did a good job from preparing me for the surgery to following up.

Did you research your surgeon before you chose him? Just curious.

Anyway, I had my post-op visits scheduled before I was ever operated on. My doctor takes aftercare very seriously. There's a patient who is the size of a stick and she still comes for regular check-ups.

My surgeon told me the most important part is the aftercare. Mine is a two year program which involves a dietician, exercise group, a psychologist and check ups.

Maybe you should call the doctor and ask if they offer any support after surgery. If not maybe you could join a group in your local area

I am in Texas too! I had a follow up appointment scheduled when I made my surgery appointment. At my follow up visit (9 days post op) I had my staples removed & made my follow up appt for my 6 week check up. Who did you use?! Crazy!

Wow, always some a-hole on these forums! Yes, I did research, but if I said No, what difference would that be? We are all on here seeking help and advice not to have our nose rubbed in what we did or didn't do. I checked him out and I still have questions. No matter how much anyone checks out their doctor it does not guarantee a smooth and complication free surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
