Depressed And Desperate For An Answer.

Recommended Posts

Today I am 8 weeks post-op. Absolutely everything I eat causes discomfort and makes me feel like I never want to eat again. It basically feels like nothing wants to go down no matter how moist it is. Everything sits right above the opening to my sleeve even if it's a tiny bite of applesauce. This feeling isn't limited to regular food, it happens with EVERYTHING except for fluids. I can drink a 32oz Water in an hour without any discomfort or consequences. And when the food finally drops into ny sleeve, a strong ache pulses through my esophagus and the area below my sternum. For about a half hour after I eat, the food goes up and down ny throat until it finally goes away, not far up enough to feel nauseous or come out of my mouth but enough to annoy me and cause discomfort. I'm beginning to wish I never did this, I can't eat anything and when I do its literally ONE bite and even with one bite it hurts. I don't know what to do anymore, I don't feel like a normal person. Granted I love that I have lost 46lbs and feel great but I have to eat every 2 or 3 hours and I DREAD swallowing anything. Any advice? Am I alone on this?

It almost sounds like you've got a tight spot.... you'd better call and see if they can check it out...

I've never had that, but it sounds like the description of many who've had either strictures, or just a narrow spot that needed to be stretched out.

Did you have a hernia repair? I've also heard from some people that their hernia repair caused that sensation for a while....

I don't think this is normal for 8 weeks out. Please have it checked by your surgeon.

I agree with the other responses, it would be a really good idea to express your concerns with your Surgeon. I did have a hard time eating for at least the first six months but yours sounds far more extreme.

I'm wishing you the best! Please check in and let us know how you're doing.

I knew someone who had constrictures at the top and bottom of her esophagus, and food would go up and down between the two spots until finally, one day, she inhaled a piece of steak that was stuck. A trip to the ER, and a scope revealed the problems.

I wouldn't mess around with it...go ask to be scoped...that might be the best thing to look in there right now. I say to ask for it, that way maybe the'll be inclined to do something versus just tell you to eat smaller bites or something.

Could you possibly have acid reflux? If you swallow the food and it is coming back up--it's possible. Have you tried to take prilosec? I know that when food was coming back up in my throat--it was acid reflux. I have to take prilosec every day to keep it at bay.

Oh and I agree with everyone else--you need to call your surgeon. My post was purely speculation. Only a surgeon can tell you what's really wrong. I hope you can figure it out.

Called my surgeon and I'm going in Friday.

Let us know what he says!
