Your story made my night! I'm usually a pretty calm person.. but I would have ripped her a new a*****e lol (I have a bit of a temper when it comes to ignorance lol) But you did so much better!! Good for you for standing up for yourself and doing it in a classy way!! ^_^

Oh I have a temper and perhaps if the student wasn't in front of me, I may have ripped her two or three new ones, but we must be professional in front of students! Besides ...I had a class to teach...like someone else mentioned..it's hard to fix stupid..LOL.

You did well Pip. I had one person tell me something similar over the phone....I said let me put you on hold for just a second. I put him on hold and never came back. I don't know how long he sat on hold before he hung up, but I hope it was a while.

It's not the ignorance that bothers me....it's the bias. Like there is a right way and a wrong way to get healthy. If you have help, somehow it's shameful.

I completely agree with you Butta! It is a dreadful shame there is bias against what we do. In fact since you mentioned that, I will tell you another story regarding me and my weight loss. My mother-in-law has always made mention of the obvious, my weight. As an aside note, my mil was bigger than I was but I digress(that's a whole other story in itself). My husband's brother is very obese. I am not trying to be mean, but he is huge...and that is saying a lot coming from an obese person. I have never approached him about what I have done because honestly, his obesity is none of my business. So we are on vacation with the whole family, and I was sitting on a bench waiting for my family (not because I had to, but because I didn't want to ride a particular ride for the 1,000 th time) and my mil, bil, & his wife found me and sit down with me. It was very hot and bil needed to sit, he looked very miserable. I felt sorry for him because I understood. Anyway.. Mil starts talking to me about my procedure. I explain what I had done. She then proceeds to turn to the bil and says..Frank..have you thought about having this done?? Well..this sent him into a 15 minute speech on how horrible weight loss surgery is. I calmly explain to the mil that WL surgery is not for everyone. It is an extremely personal decision and that I didn't take my decision lightly. I took years of thinking about it, and 8 months getting approval. And since bil was obviously very agitated, I wisely did not mention another thing to mil about my success. I find it absurd that people who obviously need to help themselves won't even attempt to get educated on the sleeve. And let's not forget, the mil used me to get at her son. Not cool mil, but I don't expect anything less. Alright..off my soap box!

Wow...Piplula.....you certainly have some restraint and was the mature one in that scenario. Thanks for sharing that story. I'm sure I will face some opposition in my journey....I might as well prepare for it.

Thanks...I have faced quite a bit, but the healthier I become the more I realize it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. Everyone has their own demons to face. I just happened to have mine cut out! Realize people will naturally oppose things or concepts they don't understand. Even with education, some people will still oppose an idea. My coworkers were concerned, but they now see how well I am doing...and believe in the process (it helps I am in the medical field). My family was scared, but realized and know me well enough to know that once my mind is made up..well come along for the ride or get out of the car! I feel I am a success and will continue to succeed. With that outlook, no one can rain on my parade!

I love the killing them with kindness method of changing someone's thinking. When I was young, I worked at a gas station. People would come in yelling at me that I need to turn on their pump, and I would always put a huge smile on my face and walk out with them to the pump and show them the giant button that says "push here to start" and push it for them. Killed them every time.

Plus, you used the words fallacy and ignorance in this post, which just makes my writer/English teacher's heart squee a little. :)

I love the way you handled this, and it is just a great example of what to do.

I have my own mil experiences. When I first had surgery, she would make a big deal of how she'd never have that surgery. She even stole things off my plate when we were eating out saying I wouldn't eat it.

Now, she is scheduled to have the sleeve surgery this month. Her tune has changed. :)

I will set the stage. I am teaching a class at work with a fellow employee. This person has not seen me in awhile ...more like a couple of years. I am also mentoring a student from a local university. So..long story short..she didn't recognize me, and when she did...she was shocked to say the least. She, of course, asked THE question...."how'd you lose the weight?" So instead of lying, I told the truth. And the response I get was and I quote, " my mom lost about 100 pounds the RIGHT way through exercise and healthy eating". While I wanted to have fire shoot out of my eyes burn all the hair off her head, I calmly explained that I am doing the RIGHT way through very healthy eating and exercise with the added benefit of built in Portion Control. What I really wanted to say was, " hey there is no need to be jealous..I know it sucks to be the fat ass in the room now, but hey you can go lose weight the RIGHT way too". Alas, I thought better of it, took the high road, and almost bit my tongue in half. I just calmly explained the fallacy of her thoughts in a calm, non-demeaning manner. In other words, I showed this person a lot more respect than she showed me. Oh well...look out...your ignorance is showing!

hahaha. . . the kind of person I am, I WOULD have said "i know it sucks to be the fat ass in the room now" hahaha. . your a better person then me!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
