Why no Advil or Alieve

Recommended Posts

At my follow-up, I asked if ibuprophen was off limits. (I have a bad knee injury that ibuprophen helps for pain). My doctor said ibuprophen was ok, so long as it is ground up first. I use Goody's (aspirin & acetominophin) which comes in those little powder packets. BC is another brand but read the ingredients. BC contains caffiene. Goody's does not.

Ibuprofen, the main ingredient in those drugs, is VERY harmful to the stomach. My dr says that in a RNY patient, it will cause ulcers because it sits in the stomach as it breaks down. For a band patient, it sits in the pouch, usually near the stoma, and breaks down. This can cause erosion in the band, a VERY bad thing.

He said if I have to take it, liquid only and even then, he'd prefer I don't.

NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflamatory drugs) like aspirin and ibuprofin (motrin, advil) are very hard on the stomach and could cause erosion, from the inside of the stomach where the band is located.
