Scheduled for Oct 10th for sleeve. Had planned on lap band. But surgeon said sleeve is a good option for me. Scared and dont know what to do. Changing my mind every other min. Bmi is 38. Need to lose 80. Is sleeve too drastic? Im scared and want to do right thing.

I don't think the sleeve is to drastic. I had a revision on the 10th and the best thing that I could have done. The band is not forever and I believe that many over the years have complications and need it removed and it is also high maintenance. The sleeve is for life and no maintenance. Don't get me wrong it is a lifechanging surgery so you need to be prepared but in the long run the weight loss will overcome any obstacles.

Hi there-

I started out researching the lap band as well but couldnt get my mind around the fact of that "thing" hanging around in my body that needed maintenance and I had to worry about it slipping, eroding, malfuntioning ect. Once I read about VSG I knew almost instantly it was what I wanted to do. If you think about it, both procedures are kinda "drastic" and even though they advertise the band as being reversible, one surgeon told me it was designed to be there for life. For me, what cemented the decision was the fact that both surgeries carried the same anesthetic risk, the same pre-op and post-op diet, same healing time...so why would I want to do the band, have it go bad or be unsuccessful and have it removed just to be looking at a revision to something else? Something that helped me considerably was watching videos on youtube..I've pasted some links for you of two in particular that I thought were helpful, but there are many. Check them out! Take your time, learn as much as you can about each procedure and you will become more comfortable with your decision! Take care ^_^

Hi! I am also scheduled for October 10th - I will be going to Mexico to Dr. Aceves. I purposely scheduled my surgery very soon after I started looking into VSG and I have tried not to dwell on it since then. I'm sure that when I get to Mexico, I will suddenly say - WTH am I doing here?!?!? I'm sure I will be a bit concerned because I HAVEN'T thought too, too much about what I am doing, but this is the right course of pre-op action for me.

My BMI is only 33.6 and I want to go from 208 down to 130. I am 5'6" and 130 is probably not going to happen, but I would rather try for that weight and not reach it completely because if I try for, say, 145 and don't make it, then I will end up at 150 or 155 and I will not be happy.

I know I will probably also experience some "buyer's remorse" when it hits me that I really did have VSG, and at the moment that I start feeling that way I will probably be feeling nauseous, can't eat, have headaches or other side effects. But I am going to remember all of the things I have read on this site from those who have been down this road before me and who have experienced the same things. They assure us that it will not last forever, that time will carry me through the rough times for the first month.

So even though I can't speak from experience (yet!) let's hang in there and take the Nike approach - JUST DO IT!!!!! I know we are going to be thrilled this time next year!!!!

Two weeks ago I was you.. well, not really, I was me but with a similar dilemma. Bypass vs. sleeve. I just could not make up my mind. As soon as I thought I knew, I would talk to someone or read something and change my mind again.

Just so you know I had been thinking about WLS for several years. I know 6 people who have bypass, 1 had DS and 2 have lap-bands (3 of these people are blood-related). So I am fortunate that I could go to all of these people and pick their brains. While I was researching the bypass, I read about the sleeve. Well, I don't know anyone personally who had the sleeve done.

Back to my dilemma,... the more I researched the sleeve and the more I asked questions, the more I knew, just knew that this was for me. But it wasn't until after my 2nd visit with the surgeon on Sept 12th that I had made my final decision.

So I agree with AStephenson, take your time, do a lot of reading, learn as much as you can, make a list of pros and cons for each. If you need to delay the surgery, delay it. Be at peace with your decision before you go into the OR. Good luck whichever way you decide.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
