Is She Right?

Recommended Posts

I went to the dr. Yesterday for my 6 week check up. I lost 30 lbs since the day of surgery. Major stall last week

Anyway, I was talking to the receptionist. She told me I looked great. My skin was clear hair looked nice etc. Joking around I said " oh I thought I would have lost more ." And she said " because you are so small, it will take you two years to lose your weight. "

Two years??? Is that what everyone experiences?

I'm by no means small. I started at 231.

My Dr. says it takes 1-2 years - I was not so small when I started (318) with a surgery weight of 274 and I am anticipating it will take me 2 years from my surgery date. I really think there are a lot of factors that go in to it all - genetics, age, patient compliance with the rules we have to follow, moving our body, staying motivated through ongoing support online and in our hospital groups...if you are down 30 and your started at 231 look at the massive milestone you are right on top of - Wonderland :)

Just think, even if it does take two years - would it be happening if you had not had the surgery? I know for myself i would be doing the same old pattern of losing and gaining - there is no way on earth I could take off 188 lbs. and have a chance of keeping it off without my new tool. We will get there!

I started out around your weight...227 on the day of surgery...I am 5'8. I had a stall last week at 4 weeks out...In fact, I gained three pounds..It was the week I introduced soft foods and I also did not exercise that week...But this week I kicked my workout game up a notched and I lost the three I gained and an additional 3 mo pounds...So I thus far, I have lost 27lbs including 1 week pre-op where I lost 5lbs...While the sleeve is a great tool, I am doing my darnest to help it with the weight loss by sticking to a workout regime...I started walking 3 miles at 60 minutes about 2 weeks post op...Now I walk/jog 3 miles at 46 minutes. I am working toward 30 minutes...I say all this to say I want to really maximize the first 6 mo of the sleeve loss...I want to be that non-ideal case and hit my goal 155-160lb within 6 mo. And that only happens with hard work both in being good with diet compliance and working out...I got 50lbs to drop over the next 5 months...I am going as hard for it as I did for cold stone creamery ice cream on double stamp day Mondays...

No, she is not correct.

I started with a 33 BMI at around 223ish pounds depending on scale. Lost the weight my surgeon wanted me to in 5 months and then another hit my personal goal in 6 months. Now I was hard core VSG diet plan too.

Each of us lose weight differently. Sounds like you are doing great! Keep your chin up and follow the plan. Don't let naysayers derail your new healthier you.

I believe you can do this...and know you believe it too. No regrets, I love my sleeve.

She is the receptionist. Smile, nod, and ignore. Listen to your doctor. Not your doctor's office staff.

It can take up to 2 years certainly. And males lose differently than Females. I dropped 130 pounds in 5 months after surgery. I excelled it with diet and a personal trainer...without those I would have STILL loss but just not as much

She might be, she might not be. There is no formula for figuring out exactly how long it will take a person to lose "X" amount of weight. Everyone's body loses differently and there are tons of factors that can affect how fast or slow we lose weight. Besides, this isn't a race, just sit back, eat healthy and enjoy the ride.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
