High White Cell Count!?!

Recommended Posts

The Doctors kept me an extra day due to an increase in my white blood cells. I was released on the understanding that get retested the next day. I am basically being tested daily here. Anyone have the same issues? What could cause that? I feel fine!

From what I know, elevated white cell count is indicative of inflammation somewhere in the body.

I had that happen...they said it was because of whatever they gave me during surgery...I felt very tired and weak ...out of it...the gave me meds through and iv for 2 hours straight and I was fine...not sure what the name of the meds are they told me but I was so out of it I couldn't remember my name...

It's probably nothing that serious. Mine always runs on the high side because I'm allergic to a little bit of everything. Plus, I'm of the opinion that we all some inflammation somewhere in our body at any given time.

Once they gave me the meds I was fine...I wouldn't worry about it...but do ask your doctor to be sure...its been almost 3 weeks since my sleeve and I'm doing better..still sore on my left side but everything else is good...

Just wanted to share my experience with elevated WBC counts... I continually have high WBC counts whenever I have routine blood work done and my doctor has chalked it up to stress because I also have vasovagal syncope. Basically I have an extreme fear of needles and having blood drawn, to the point that I have fainted and/or had severe nausea and vomiting. So, in my case the high WBC count is stress-induced as I have no other indicators of infection and or disease.

Hopefully your results will prove nothing to be concerned about!

I stayed an extra day in the hospital for the same reason. Mine shot up to 15,000, but were back down to 10,000 (still kinda high) the next morning. My surgeon had me go through an upper GI the day the results came back so high. Just to make sure I didn't have a leak. I didn't and I was fine. High WBC's can be an indicator of infection.

I am four weeks out with constant diarrhea. They tested me for c dif but it came back negative. But my white blood count was high? Could this mean a leak? Or just an infection of some kind. I'm waiting to hear back from them. Everything I eat goes straight through me. Dairy, non-dairy, all Protein Shakes. I'm miserable.

If they aren't finding an answer, ask them to retest. My first C. diff came back negative but I insisted they retest using a PCR test instead of the ELISA test and it was positive. In the meantime, try and get in lots of Probiotics ....the good, refrigerated, multi strain ones contain 50+ billion CFU like Garden of Life brand (usually found in health food stores) not the worthless OTC kind they sell in the grocery store. Saccharomyces boulardii can be helpful, too.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
