Oatmeal On The Puree Diet?

Recommended Posts

As with most questions of this sort, it really gets down to your doctor's plan and how he defines things. I had oatmeal the day after I got out of the hospital, but my doc's plan calls for purees/mushes and soft Proteins, as tolerated, at that point (and everything else the following month) while other docs have more discrete stages - Clear Liquids, all liquids, purees, soft proteins, everything else, phased in over longer times. It basically gets down to your doc's experience with the sleeve and his comfort level with his patients' progression.

Myself, I would say that you could try it and see how things go, but I am not your doc and don't know where he places oatmeal within his progression stages - it's really his call, and that's what you are paying him for.

My thought on oatmeal is that we have very little room for food, and limited opportunity to get in our Protein. In my mushy stage, I only consumed items that had protein and then supplemented with shakes to reach my goal. I have seen oatmeal on some plans people have posted, but I wonder how you could add protein to such a small amount of carbs.

At four weeks and beyond, my plan allows oatmeal (not instant), or any complex carb, only once per day, and after protein. It does seem that every surgeon offers a different plan. If you try it, go slow... I'm imagining this to be one of those things that might expand in the belly. Good luck!

Just started my purée diet today and really wanted some oatmeal but can we have that?

It's on my list of purée foods - just add a bit more Water or milk so it won't be so thick goin down

It was on my mushee stage, but keep in mind that you cannot put alot in your little tummy right now, and you need to fill up on as much Protein as possible first.

I am still pre-op, but before I would doctor up my oatmeal with a scoop of vanilla protien powder. Definitely add extra Water, it made it sorta gloopy.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
