Beef Protein Shots

Recommended Posts

The Johns Hopkins nutricians did not recommend Protein shots for a few reasons. First, they are usually made with a lesser Protein source. You need to look for whey protein isolate - it should be the primary/only source. Second, they argue that the human body really can only absorb 20-30 grams of protein in a sitting. Accordingly, your body better absorbs the protein over the course of the day. I've read in a couple different places that morning and evening are ideal times to have a Protein shake. If you like savory, I can recommend Unjury's chicken Soup flavored protein. I've had luck with their chocolate Supreme (with almond milk), strawberry Sorbet (with water), their unflavored powder (which goes amazingly well into a lot of foods and drinks) and chicken Soup. I'm looking forward to trying their cheese sauce in October, when I can have Pasta again. Hopkins strongly recommended Unjury's products, which are all made/sourced in the US. Please do not buy anything made in China - you cannot be sure about the safety or integrity of products made there. I also liked Orange Creme by Chike and can't wait to try their Iced coffee flavor.

Before I went through nutrition counseling, I had found a protein shot at CVS - I think it was fruit flavored and had 40 g of protein. It smelled like wet dog. Fruity wet dog. Yick. I couldn't do it.

I love Chike, but was surprised&disappointed by how high the calories are--darn. They're really good.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
