I did mine in Mexico without anyone:-) I was worried about them taking a kidney while I was under and I would not know it. I was totally fine and had no problems.

If you are going to Tijuana, you aren't going to the war torn area...

I went to Piedras Negras for my sleeve surgery with Dr. Alvarez. It is really safe crossing the border there. Never heard of anyone not coming back from MX after they went for surgery. Hundreds if people cross the border each day for Medical Tourism.< /p>

I honestly think anyone even considering having surgery in Mexico is just nuts. There are plenty of options available within the US, why travel into dangerous territory to have surgery? Plus, the key to your success is your follow up care, who is going to monitor this care for you?

Please do your homework before you shoot off your mouth about something of which you obviously haven't investigated... There is an entire industry built on medical "tourism" and those locations are not in the middle of crime ridden sections of countries... There are NUMEROUS people on this board that have had their surgeries South of the border with absolutely no problems...

I had my sleeve surgery in Juarez with Dr Rodriguez. I had great care and no problems whatsoever. The staff at the hospital were very competent and kind. I wasn't willing to put my family in debt $25,000 to have the surgery locally in Omaha. I have no regrets at all.

Sweetheart I've done my homework and have personally seen what kind of trouble has come out of Mexico. If you'd seen first hand what I have you would feel the same way.

Then do share.... that's what the OP was asking for. From what I've learned on this forum the well know surgeons down there are very experienced and successful. Not everyone has the option ($) to have surgery in the US. Also please do not insult those who have a different opinion than yours. This does not make them "nuts."

To the OP... do a search for this topic in the forums. There are many members who can give you first hand information about this experience.

Why would you not have options in the US? You can have a Sleeve done at My Bariatric Solutions for as low as 7' date='200. Once you add up your travel expense, and post op care its just as cheap to have it done here. I wasn't trying to offend anyone. I just think with all the regulations certified bariatric surgeons have to go through in the US its the safest way to go.[/quote']

The website I found says the cash quote is $10,950 and this does not include travel expense.

I'm also a My Bariatric Solutions/ Dr. Stowers patient. My hiatal hernia repair was covered by my insurance. I paid $7200 for the rest of the procedure.

While there are good surgeons in Mexico, I think you do need to do your homework. It seems the better surgeons charge a bit more but have better outcomes. My surgeon here in San Diego said he fixes leaks all the time for people who went to Mexico for the surgery. I would also be concerned about care post-surgery, but if you can line that up in the US, go for it. There is nothing wrong with foreign surgeons...my husband is one! He was trained in the US though and his opinion was that he preferred a US trained surgeon for me (and insurance covered it). Turns out my surgeon, Dr. Horgan, is from Argentina. He's the Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery and the Center for the Treatment of Obesity at UCSD.

Like I said, as low as $7,200. If you have health insurance a portion of your procedure can be covered by the insurance company. They are very good at what they do. I was a self pay patient through them myself. I would encourage anyone considering the procedure look into their program. Also, if you live 150+ miles away from them, they will pay for 1 night in a hotel to help cut down on your travel expense. They really work with you and they're staff is top notch. Dr. Stowers bedside manner is excellent, I've never had a doctor that is more caring then Dr. Stowers. I can't speak highly enough about Dr. Stowers and their program.

I was self pay and the least expensive found and done at 12,500 which is what I paid. A LOT of people on here had to go self pay for insurance issues...You spout of about having "done your homework" yet you just joined this site today and you aren't willing to share your facts? Gimme a break..

I had my surgery in Cd Juarez with Dr Rodriguez. Yes the " the most dangerous city in Mexico!" I never for one second felt unsafe. My insurance would not cover any portion for surgery, zip, zero, nada! I did so much research and I am happy with my decision. I was always with a doctor by my side, the psychiatrist, the surgeons, nurses! They came to my room before surgery, the team met with my parents while I was in recovery. Nurses were so nice and helpful, and checked in on me so much I hardly could sleep! It may not be for everybody but I respect others decisions, bottom line I need to be healthy and this was the choice for me!

I think all of us should feel that our surgeon is the best, otherwise we would not have trusted him to do our surgery. I never started this journey with the intention of going to MX but that is where I ended up. I found a wonderful Dr and found absolutely nothing negative on any forum about him. I made the choice to have him do my surgery. He cost more than most other Dr. In MX and that was my choice. I could have been self pay at a hospital 45 minutes from my home. Did that Dr have the credentials of my MX surgeon? NO he does not, I made the choice to travel several hundred miles so I could have better surgical skills and care. I loved my Dr and received wonderful care, medicine and friendship from him and his staff. I can still call him or email him at anytime and he is there to help me. Just because he is not a US Dr. does not make him bad, nor does it make those if us that choose to go to him wrong.

Due to the HIPAA law I legally cannot discuss what has occurred to the patients that have been treated at our facility. I would hope for your own privacy you would understand that. All I am saying is do your homework. I'm not trying to upset anyone about their decision. Just fully know who you are trusting your life to. I fully stand behind bariatric surgery and I am very passionate about how it changes lives. Just do research and know there may also be a program within your area that can help you reach your weight loss goals even as a self pay patient. Im not the only person on here praising the well educated and trained staff at My Bariatric Solutions and Dr. Stowers excellent results and wonderful success stories.

Sure looks like it!

I don't buy the HIPPA line, you can share facts and research without compromising privacy. Either you have info to substantiate your assertion or you don't.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
