aussie kelloff 79 Posted September 20, 2012 Hello everyone, Just wanted to introduce my self, I have been very interested in all the posts on this thread from the moment I joined. The main reason that I got the sleeve was so I could have another baby. Plus the other reasons of becoming healthy for my my other child and to prevent any health issues in my future. I am 32 years old and have an almost 3 year old, I fell pregnant first time around pretty easy as I had dropped 30kgs (66 lb) due to losing it for my wedding, I then put on that 30kgs during the pregnacy and then another 20kgs (44 lb) in the 12 months after. At my heaviest I was 159kgs (350lb). I have been fat all my life. I was still obese when I got married but did feel great. My issue is keeping it off long term. We started actively trying again when my son turned 1, that was almost 2 years ago. But nothing, every month I got disappointed. But now I am 25kgs down (55lb) I am 8 weeks post op and haven't felt this good in years. I am loving the sleeve and love dropping my weight but can't wait to get pregnant again. I had my 2nd follow up with my NUT today and she says most surgeons (here in Australia) say its ok the start trying after about 6 months. I was wondering what everyone's opinion was. I am hoping to drop another 25kgs (55lb) by the year possibly start trying in the new year. Yes I know I won't be at goal but I really don't want to wait much longer as the gap would already be 4 years. Thanks for reading and your comments.
srs82781 83 Posted September 20, 2012 My situation is very similar! I am at 260 had dropped a lot of weight before my wedding 2 years ago and 4 mos out from my wedding I got pregnant. I gained about 50+ Poinds durning my pregnancy and then only lost about 20. I want more children but I don't want to go thru another high risk pregnancy due to obesity. I want to be healthy for my 18mo old and also for future children. My surgeon told my husband, who was so concerned about being able to have kids after surgery, that it was safe for me to have a pregnancy with the sleeve then it is to be pregnant and morbidly obese. I am currently waiting for a date for my surgery all my pre-op clearances have been completed! Hoping for late October early November. My doctor recommends a year before trying for another but I know every doctor is different and we will be monitored with them so they will know what's best for us! So happy for this decision for both of us! Good luck! 1 aussie kelloff reacted to this
emily_0192010 168 Posted September 20, 2012 Hello Congrats on doing so well already! I was sleeved for a different reason, as I am not at that stage in my life yet (I'm 21), but many, many, many people do! I was told (cause they tell every female patient) that ideally you should wait until you are passed your year mark before pregnancy to ensure that you are at optimal health and have no problems getting in all of your nutrition. I just hit a year out and I can still barely eat 3 ounces at a time! A pregnant woman needs to eat! As for the gap, my sister and I are 15 years apart. I think in the end it doesn't really matter. As far as how long you should wait, I've heard all kinds of different advice. My personal surgeon suggested no less than 18 Months. 6 Months sounds a lot better if you're trying to get pregnant sooner. As long as you're eating enough nutritionally by then (which I do believe is the only real concern post op for becoming pregnant) per your Dr. it should be okay. SleeveandRNYchica 1,155 Posted September 20, 2012 Mine says 18 months to 2 years! I will be 40 by that time. I would really like to get preggo more around the 12 month mark, but we shall see. Good luck!
dadici 21 Posted September 29, 2012 I'm 31, I had no trouble conceiving my 5 1/2 year old, but after trying for #2 for the last 2 years I finally decided that was the push I needed to get the surgery. I'm 300lb, my doc says 1 year to 18 months, I'm really hoping I hit my goal close to a year. My daughter will already be pushing 8 when we have the baby if we do a year from now! I wish I had decided to do the surgery years ago (although I guess I should wait to say that until after Oct 31...haha)
CrisB83 47 Posted October 1, 2012 Hi Aussie! I also had the sleeve for the primary reason of having children. Healthiness was also important (I suppose... lol) but the weight was keeping me from my lifelong dream of having children. My dr. told me 12-18 months would be the best, however the nutritionist I met with at his office told me unofficially that 6 months would probably be long enough, esp. if you want a baby really, really bad. I think one of the biggest concerns and reasons to wait longer is the prospective mother's emotional health. After having the surgery, there are unending issues with eating for several months, even in the best of cases (just having to be aware of what and how much you're eating, what will possibly make you feel a little queasy if you eat it, etc.) Then, for many, many women, getting pregnant causes more concerns and obstacles eating-wise (morning sickness, cravings, aversions, etc). If the mother has had a difficult recovery process and then has never-ending morning sickness shortly after *finally* starting to feel better, it can be upsetting or depressing. So, I think it's one of those things where the doctor is trying to see the various scenarios that might pan out. A situation where the woman has a very taxing recovery process from the surgery, then gets pregnant accidentally 4 months out would be of high concern. A situation where the woman bounces right back from surgery and gets pregnant with a desperately wanted child 6 months after surgery might not be as problematic. I think, nutritionally speaking, 6 months is probably plenty of time to recover. There is nothing wrong with having Soups and shakes while pregnant to help get calories/nutrition. Emotional health is much more tricky- I have wanted a child my whole life, and it is still hard for me to cope with the added stress of feeling constantly queasy after struggling with eating a few bites without pain just a short time ago. Sometimes my feelings are like, "When will I ever be able to just eat in peace?!?" lol

aussie kelloff 79 Posted October 2, 2012 Thank you so much for all your replys. So many different answers. I am hoping to start trying at 6 months out, just depends on how much weight I have dropped. Good luck to all of you! I will keep you all posted.
meremb 12 Posted October 2, 2012 Hi there! I HIGHLY suggest waiting to get pregnant until you have dropped all of the weight. It is extremely dangerous for your baby while you are losing weight at a rapid pace
aussie kelloff 79 Posted October 3, 2012 Hi there! I HIGHLY suggest waiting to get pregnant until you have dropped all of the weight. It is extremely dangerous for your baby while you are losing weight at a rapid pace Thanks meremb, I have heard that too but I have also heard your body will stop losing weight for the baby, as it needs more nutrients. I am not planning to actively try until the new year but I am also not taking birth control. We are being careful as I do want to drop as much weight as I can before hand.
