Let's see,

My husband was in Somolia (and in the book "Blackhawk Down")...and got screwed by a Democratic President.

My husband was also in Iraq and Afghanistan numerous times and we believe that we had every right to be there. There are things that the American public doesn't get to hear.

Also, we own a gunsmithing business now that he is retired.

My stepson is in the Army and my daughter is in the National guard.

I am a nurse, and I see a GREAT deal of abuse in the system.

I don't like taxes.

So, needless to say, I am a republican.

Firstly, thanks so much to your husband, your stepson and your daughter, those are the real heroes.

I agree with you, I feel we have the right to be there and I also know that the American public does not hear everything, it's unfortunate but it's the truth, I have spoken to many that have served in Iraq and all say the same thing, they feel that the US made the right decision by going in Iraq, they feel that things have improved much there and they are so proud to see the result of their sacrifice and they feel that the Iraqis appreciate them much too, I've heard these statements over and over, it's overwhelming... all I can say is thank you so much to our heroes!:smile2: God bless them!

What a can of worms you opened up! I personally vote for who I think is the best. I have voted both R & D. I look at the issues and the answers for them. I know a lot of people who vote there party even when they compleatly dissagree with the canidate. Not me.

I think I will keep quiet on that note...since my 19 year old is getting ready to go over there. It was his choice, no gun to his head, and we are supporting his decision 100%. Just like it was my husband's choice to sign on longer after the war started, just like it was my daughter's decision to join 2 years ago.

Ummmm, you haven't lost a family member there, but your husband was there, your son is about to go there, are they not at risk of losing their lives? wasn't your husband at risk as well while he was there? Hello!!!!:smile2:

And you brought a very valid point, like your family members and the rest of those brave people who join the military, it was their decision, a pretty darn brave one by the way, soldiers know they might die, there are people in the world who want to do something selfless. Some people want to protect others, regardless of the risk involved. These brave people are willing to die for their country, you know, I had a soldier tell me once that the highest honor to most soldiers is to die while fighting for their country and that he was proud and willing to do that. For the most part they also believe in their purpose at this time in Iraq and all over the world.

Why do people become police officers? It may kill you. Why do people become firefighters? A fire may kill you. Why do people become rescue swimmers? That may kill you too..... maybe I'm the one who's wrong ...:crying: ...but I feel like some people just don't get it....

Well, I am independent.

Let me break down as to why:

I am pro-life, in that I don't like abortion (though I am not so staunch as to think about stopping 1st trimester abortions, nor rape, nor life of mother). - Like Republicans.

I am opposed to death penality (I can't say I'm pro-life if I want to take a life at the other end). - Like Democrats.

I am pro-family (marriage as one man, one woman) though not to the point of a constitutional amendment - Like Republicans.

I am pro gun control (if you want to take the second amemdment to it's most literal, fine... let everyone have a musket so that we can have the same gun rights as the founding fathers). - Like Democrats.

I am pro-border control, but I believe that no one should gripe about people coming from Mexico illegally if they have a confederate flag anywhere in their house - OK... Neither party wants to touch that one.

I don't think the president lied about the war in Iraq, and I don't think we can cleanly get out of iraq, but I do believe that the president had such hatred for Sadam Hussan that he let himself get led into the wrong war. (a simi-democratic view).

I don't think we can drill our way out of the high oil prices (if we could, then why do oil prices go up everytime a hurricane threatens the gulf of Mexico). But I do believe we need to be independent of middle eastern oil... (I don't think either democrats or republicans have a clue on this one).

So, I am just an independant.

I think many of us can claim to be independent when it comes to comparing the two major parties. We all want to believe that we can think for ourselves. None of us wants to believe that we are taken in by the politicians and political pundits.

But right now, after the events and politics of the past 8 years, I don't believe that we can not take sides. This is a crucial time in America's history - at least in my lifetime. The conservatives have gone much further in their suggestions of what they think is good for America than ever before. They want to impose their religious beliefs on every American, no matter what.

I believe that our only hope out of this mess and our only hope against hope that it won't continue as it is or even get worse, is to vote for Senator Obama. Because I believe that Senator Obama is one of the most imtelligent people to ever have run for president (in my lifetime) and I think that he has as his goal an intent to treat all Americans fairly. Fairness has been lacking in our government over the past 8 years and that is unforgivable in a country that claims to offer freedom and democracy for its' citizens.

What we need is a president who actually cares about all of the people in this country, not just the ones who have money and power. And John McCain does not offer that to us. He has obviously sold out to the powerful, biased people running the Republican party.

It isn't that we just need any old Democrat to get things working well again. We need a man like Senator Obama. I hope that you will consider voting for him, after you learn what he really intends to do, not what the Republicans claim that he intends to do. Let's put someone in the White House who is intelligent and who will represent all of us, not just some of us.

I would venture to say that we have heard this argument made in every election since Nixon.

8 years ago, I heard that it was vital, because the president would certainly be bringing 3 new judges to the supreme court. Not that much happened to change our world on that front.

We are at war, whether we agree or disagree with it, but it is winding down.

Other than the fact that gas prices are high, sending everything else up in price, this is critical, but I don't see that it is more so than any other election. After all, since 1979 when we were talking about the 80 election, presidents and congresses have been talking about getting away from foreign oil... nothing from either side has been done about it, even though both McCain and Biden have been in congress for much of that time. (now, gas has gone from fears of 1.00 per gallon to 4.00 per gallon).:biggrin::confused::thumbup:

Honestly, the president only has so much to say over any of the key issues. They propose things, congress either passes them or now, the judges say whether legal.

So yes, elections are importantm and I will most certainly vote in this one... but no, I don't think this one is more important than any other.

Well Jack I have been very happy with Senator Obama's performance in the Senate. His voting record reflects very intelligent and forward thinking rationale.

As for McCain's voting record and the things he has ascribes to now that he is dancing to the tune of the right wing Republicans instead of behaving like the maverick he says he is, go competely against my beliefs. So voting for McCain is not an option.

As for the 3 Surpreme Court Justices that Bush appointed, you Stevegoad, must agree with their decisions and opinions because for the most part I do not and I believe that those 3 appointments will have huge ramafications for our future. Some of the comments that have come out of that court in the past couple of years are downright assinine.

And MissyGordon, don't get me started. The most recent and obvious sell outs are his V.P. pick (and that one is pretty huge), his recanting how he believes government should behave regarding Roe v. Wade, his embracing most of the policies of the Bush administration, etc. Either he was fooling us before or he's fooling us now. Either way, I'm done with him. As far as I'm concerned, I agree with whoever said that he would have been better off to step aside instead of running for president this go 'round. There's no question that people would have loved to build a monument to his military service and government service. Perhaps now, not so much.

Well, those things you mention are certainly up for debate. I for one happen to think his choice for VP was brilliant. It has completely revitalized his campaign.

I am not going to disparage Obama/Biden (like you do every chance you get with McCain/Palin). I like to think I'm above all that. I feel that pointing out their differences point by point is sufficient, but not in a disparaging and angry way. Whichever ideals are closer to my own, there it is.

I think this is going to be a very exciting election and am really looking forward to some great debates between 2 very different political tickets.

Missygordon: You're absolutely right! His V.P. pick certainly has revitalized his campaign! And you're also right, IMHO, that all of these hot topics are open for debate.

It is very refreshing to discuss things with a McCain backer and NOT have them disparage Obama. Good for you.

I used to be much more magnanimous toward McCain, but after having felt the sting of how his campaign has been run, I believe that Senator Obama backers have to step up to the plate and respond to the accusations and misstatements. It is also encumbent upon us to point out the times when the Republicans have been talking out of both sides of their mouths. And lately, that has been all too often.

I agree that the debates should reveal a lot and clarify a lot and that is as it should be.

I'm a republican who voted for Bush. I am disappointed in the way his Presidency has gone but I will vote for McCain.
