That's exactly why developing good eating habits is so important. You will still have restriction, but there is no telling how much capacity and appetite you are going to have. Maybe a little more, maybe a lot more. The sleeve is going to transfer some of the workload to you so you have to be ready. My ability to eat has already jumped up quite a bit since my surgery in May. But I still measure all my foods and stay away from the foods that I know will cause me to overeat.

Yes, one of the BEST articles I've read, no hype or goofy non-info just straight talk. It's just good sense to take advantage of the honeymoon period to not only lose weight but develop good eating and exercise habits. As many have pointed out the VSG is a TOOL and not a GUARANTEE.

Just some personal braggin':

My honeymoon lasted about 10 months then all of a sudden I could eat a lot more and the weight loss just ground to a veritable halt. It took another 4 months to lose another 15 pounds and that's it, I've been stuck at 205 since then. I'm 6' tall so 205 is still overweight but I do make it look good, pretty flat stomach and I LOOK thin.

I've actually reduced in size since then, my clothes and rings are looser. I'm now comfortable in pants 2 sizes smaller. I appear to have gained more muscle but stayed at the same weight. All my life I've always been heavier than I look, even when I was a young skinny minny. My mom used to say I had Iron in my legs.

Great article. So many times I've said "If I could just lose all this weight, I think I could maintain it." so here's my chance. It's a little scary and I know how lazy I am. I am trying to make better habits now (before surgery) especially with exercise. It's nice to know what to expect and that I need to make the most out of the first 6-12 months. It's not the time for procrastinating!

That's what I got from it too. I think the moral of the story is that the first 6 months it's extra extra restricted because of the healing and swelling....once healed and swelling is down' date=' you go from extra extra restricted to just restricted. And in the gastric sleeve, restricted means you have only 10-15% of the capacity you had before surgery, which is still VERY restricted.

Whew! There were way too many "restricted"s in those last two sentences! I confused myself....

Basically my take on it is the "honeymoon" period is just part of the process when your stomach is healing and adjusting and you just don't want or just can't eat. Since you don't have a choice you might as well make the best of it because that is when you can get the most bang for your buck.[/quote']

I wore a slimming/sauna belt 24-7 for first 6months I didn't want loose skin and thought it would help I guess it did a little. The real although,Unintended benefit was you guessed it ,Restriction !!! I now wear it in evenings mostly that is when I struggle with Snacks especially on heavy gym days !

I encourage all new sleevers to fully take advantage of the honeymoon period. Get moving and keep moving, stay away from sugar and carbs as much as possible. I'm nearly 2 years post-op and I can definitely eat more slider, junk, carbs and sugar. However when I'm eating dense protien truly my limit is about 4oz of meat, fish, chicken, pork, etc. I cannot eat more than that.

My honeymoon really only lasted about 4 months. :( After that, losing weight was much slower and I felt like I had to work much harder to lose. I hit a wall before my one year and stalled for about 4 months. Then went on to lose a bit more, but I've been stuck almost this entire year.

I'm not the only one either who "hit a wall" in regards to loss, so definitely work your tool to the best of your ability. As for hunger, when I eat normal regular Protein and stay away from sugar/carbs I still have virtually no hunger. When I eat sugar/carbs it definitely makes me want more.

loved this article, thanks for sharing!!! lots of good info for us who are new to being sleeved. I'm only 6 days out and wondering what the future holds. LOL I had THOUGHT I had a pretty good idea what to expect before I had the surgery but now I think I really couldn't have understood what this would be like until I'd done it.. for me at least.. for example I can't believe I'm not hungry, like not at all. It's weird but it sounds like once the swelling goes down and I'm healed up that physical hunger will come back to some degree.

I found this great article about the importance of the first 6-12 months (depending on how much you have to lose) after surgery.... it really made me realize I've got to make the most of that time.

I know the veteran Sleevers know this stuff but I thought the newbies and pre-surgery sleevers (like me) would be interested. It's a gastric bypass website but all the vital info is the same for Sleevers.

        Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

      Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life.       Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

        Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
