New From WI: Banded 09/19/06

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! After many years of yo-yo dieting I decided to get the lap-band. My insurance denied me, therefore I was a private pay. I figure I can spend that much on a car then I can spend that much on me! I just had my surgery on Tuesday (September 19) and am up moving around. Muscle soreness still around the port site, but otherwise feeling great! Maybe too great! I am hungry...and tired (so tired of liquids.) But I am dedicated and will follow doctor's orders.

I look forward to talking with all of you for support, motivation, and maybe some day venting!

Eve

Welcome Eve,

I was banded on the 15th, so am in basically in the same 'soreness' boat as you. I'm Canadian so no insurance will cover this. I told my husband I'd take it out of our retirement plan because if I don't lose the weight I won't be around for retirement anyway. I ended up taking out a loan. How much did your surgery cost? I paid $15,000.

My car better have alot of years left in it!!! Bank will never give me more $.

I can tell my swelling has gone down now, because I can consume more. Can't wait until first fill. I talked to my Dr. on Friday and I'm allowed a bit of purred foods....told them there was no way I could choke down anymore Protein Shakes. And vegtable stock basically has no calories when thats all you have all day.

Cream of chicken Soup has never tasted so good.:)

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone! Carmen I am from the Janesville area...I had my surgery in Fort Atkinson by Dr. Marc Erickson.

To answer the question about the self pay...it was $17,500 but included everything including the first years adjustments. I am getting around better and off the pain meds. I go for my 1 week post op visit tomorrow! I am still sore at the port site and it hurts like the dickens when I bend over or sit for a period of time. But it's definately getting better! :clap2:

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
