Struggling With Protein

Recommended Posts

I am only on my second day full liquids but am struggling to get my Protein in. If I am getting 35 grams I am lucky. I just tried the Protein Shots and thought they would be a great small source of protein but they are soooo sweet that they make my tiny tummy churn, I can't drink it. Does anyone have any suggestions? How to use the unflavoured Protein Powder? I kind of feel like a fish out of Water so to speak not sure how to go about this. My tummy is full after 2 ounces so I am either sipping water or sipping a shake all day.

Thanks to anyone for your help

If you have the powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury brand unflavored Protein it can be mixed with just about anything including Water. Can go in Soup, hot or cold tea, etc. No graininess, no taste change, maybe a little bit of color change, though.

I have not had surgery yet but know so many who have had the bypass that I am expecting to struggle to get it all in whether it be Water or Protein. The numbers you hear (64 oz of water and 64-84 g of protein per day) are down the road goals. They are not expected right after surgery. Do the best you can with both. You don't want to get dehydrated.

Good luck!

You're doing just fine. You can probably get some Proteins from yogurt, cottage cheese, ricotta and more shakes. Your shakes are considered part of your Water intake. When I was on full liquids I could barely get in 20 grams of Protein. As time goes your stomach swelling will go down and you'll be able to get more protein in. Keep up with the shakes. When I want to boost my protein, I ordered Premier Shakes from Amazon.com. They are 30 grams of protein. Good luck and let us know how you're doing.

Stay away from the Protein shots. They are usually a combination of collagen Protein (does not absorb), casein protein (absorbs slowly) and whey protein (quick absorption).

Bottom line, when you do have protein, try to use whey.< /p>

But FIRST, ensure you are getting your liquids in. You won't end up in the ER due to lack of protein, but you will get there if you are dehydrated. Once you get healed a little more, you will be able to meet your protein needs.

I use the Premiere shakes with some ice to cool and thin them. 30grams of Protein in 11oz so if you can get two of them in you are at 60grams of protein for the day. They took priority over Water for me. I only like the chocolate, hated the vanilla. Got mine at both costco and Sam's club. I added the unflavored Unjury protein to chicken broth for more protein and liquid the first week.

I take the Yoplait smoothie which has 1 Protein, 8 oz if 2% milk which is 8, then I use 1/2 package Advocare Very berry shake which is 12 Proteins. So for my shake I get 21 protein. They are really good. I like the strawberries and bananas. They also have chocolate and bananas.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
