Starvation Mode W Sleevers?

Recommended Posts

Hi Group,

I'm 4 weeks out today and I've had too much time on my hands today apparently because I keep having all these questions....

When we dieted 'pre-sleeve' and didn't eat enough we went into starvation mode and messed up our metabolism. Why doesn't that happen with the sleeve?

Thanks for humoring my confused state today. :-)

I think I need to get back to work soon!! Lol!

I asked this same thing Doxie..... I even asked my surgeon and NUT.....

Doc said this surgery completely resets body set points. And because for the first year or so your calories are so drastically reduced your body has no choice but to burn the fat. The key is to make sure you get the tons of Protein in so that your body doesn't burn muscle first before fat.

The nutritionist did not mention the reset of body set points....she just said your body has no choice but to burn fat if you are only consuming 500-600 calories a day. I never really got an answer about what effect the extremely low calories will have on metabolism for down the road maintenance. My concern is ok, so when your body eventually gets used to living on 600 calories does that mean you'll gain weight on 1000? The reason I'm here doing this surgery is because I have been unable to lose weight on 1200 calories a day. I finally came to the conclusion that this was my only way...

You can be in starvation mode as a sleever. Dangerous to be below 500 calories a day even after newly sleeved.

Most people recommend between 700-900 calories a day those first few months. Depending on how you get your calories you can enter a state of ketosis. Talk to your nutritionist about how to best eat your calories. I got mine from Protein mostly severely limiting my intake of carbs.

Highly recommend if you do not have your own surgery center's post op diet plan that you "google" sleeve post op diet plan. I found several, some with conflicting information and followed middle of the road info. But never did I go against my surgeons advice.

Best wishes!

iegal: i've got a great post-op diet plan, that's not the question. However, I appreciate your post because it is a good point.

My question is if we are in starvation mode as sleevers why are we burning fat when we were not pre-sleeve? We were hoarding our fat. Maybe its because we can sustain starvation mode longer with a sleeve so our body finally gives up?

I have a daily issued of eating enough. I eat during the day usually one sugar free pudding, 3 Protein Shakes, maybe a piece of cheese. Thats really it, I have a hard time making myself eat, but I am making sure I take my Vitamins.< /p>

One more thing, both doc and NUT told me that based on my history (lost 160lbs 12 years ago-- kept most of it off but gained 60 back over the last five years even while restricting calories/carbs)

that I should not expect to lose quickly. NUT told me that she would be happy with 2lbs a week - which kind of disappointed me but in my head I already knew it. I guess I was hoping for a dramatic miracle! :)

I lost 110 pounds from 08-09, went to grad school and gained it all back. I guess I won't lose quickly either. That sucks! It just means we'll have to really stay on top of the physical activity.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
