Back To Smoking

Recommended Posts

I converted to vaping (e-cigs) a few months ago prior to my LapBand removal. Having sleeve surgery on Friday and my doctor is completely fine with me inhaling liquid nicotine. Don't know much about ******, but removing the 4,000+ toxins from tar, tobacco, etc. is what has pleased my doctor. He feels that nicotine will be, eventually, proven to be as safe as caffeine in our bodies.

:::vaping Butterscotch flavored nicotine as we speak:::

Your doctor would not have many colleagues who agree with him. The health risks from smoking have been scientifically proven and having watched my children's father die from lung cancer ( he smoked a packet a day) I can tell you it's not a nice way to die. So far I haven't seen anyone die from drinking too many lattes.

My doc said I had to quit e-cigs two weeks before surgery. He said the nicotine constricts your blood vessels and ups your risk for issues during and after surgery. I decided to quit three weeks before and am doing ok (surgery is June 17).

He says cigarette smokers have to quit a month in advance.

Nicotine is such a hard addiction to break!

I quit smoking after 17 years on January 10, 2012 by switching to an e cigarette. My surgeon told me I had to be at least six weeks smoke free or the surgery would be canceled, including the e cigarette. I quit for good on January 12, 2013. Feel better than ever! Good luck to everyone trying to quit. The e cigarette.helps alot, but it is still hard!!

I was told at my first consultation that my doctor would not do the surgery if I smoked....and they do test you for it. I had tried everything in the past to quit and nothing seemed to work....until this. I quit cold turkey and it didn't bother me at all. After not smoking for 13 months I thought, I'll just have ONE. That was all it took ????. Now I'm back to being a full time smoker and so disappointed in myself, I feel like such a failure in that aspect. Maybe one of these days I'll be able to quit again....for good!

well - I"m healing great - never quit smoking prior to surgery and still smoking. doctor says I'm doing great with healing and there were no problems with surgery and that is all went like text book - did the breathing exercises - and am fine. to each their own....flame away. As i become healthier diet wise I may at that time make the decision for chantix and such - but I'm not there yet.

I'm like you as well, I didn't smoke past 12midnight the night before surgery, surgery was 9/12 & then after surgery a few days I started back, I want to quit sometimes but other times I'm like oh well... Quitong ik is better for us of course & like you I'm not there yet.. Sometimes I feel guilty as I'm sitting here smoking one now & I'm like why are you smoking, it can take longer to heal from it & the list goes on as to why I don't need it but any smoker knows that's easier said then done...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
