The Food Porn Problem

Recommended Posts

Interesting article from Fitbie today:

http://fitbie.msn.com/food-porn-problem

Another study in the journal Obesity found that simply seeing food increases levels of the hunger hormone ghrelin, even after eating a regular meal. And maybe worst of all, the part of your brain that governs self-control fails to kick in with food porn the way it does with actual food. In a recent study, Belgian researchers found that women who looked at images of chocolate were more likely than women who sat in front of a plate of chocolate to overeat hours later. Fascinating! Not to mention troubling.

OH....MY....GOODNESS!!! :o

Very interesting article indeed! I've noticed this to be true for myself..watching tv, not hungry or snacky then the commercials start and I'm suddenly ravenous. Take a bite of something really decadent and throw furtive glances about, thinking, "where can I be all alone with this?" or actually feel...dare I say it....aroused?? TMI I know!...but how can food elicit such responses?? My mind acts very inappropriately at times...

So are you saying our little food porn thread on here should have a warning label and disclaimers?? Wow! crazy stuff...

haha! I knew this had to be true - the part about just looking at images causes the production of ghrelin is fascinating. It's like how one tiny cookie or potato chip can set me up for ravenous cravings for carbs and anything and everything else - even after surgery. When I stay far away from them - not a problem.

gotta keep remembering food is fuel - not entertainment :)

I am a huge fan of reading food blogs and cooking - I usually try at least one new recipe a week. I am going to have to stop reading food blogs and looking at Pinterest at least until I'm on regular food (pre-op diet right now).

I guess I should turn off the food Network more often then. It's just so much fun to watch them cook! It does get my head hunger going sometimes though.

Imagine being a chef! Lol. Honestly though, I knew what I was going into and I try to stay focused as I can be. It really does get easier. I'm only 2 1/2 months but I don't miss anything! Maybe because I'm around it all day, from my mom cooking at home to working on a restaurant, I just drink my Water and move on ;)

I remember years ago when I tried Redux..anyone remember that?? Thank goodness it gave me a rash and I had to stop taking it after 2 weeks (horrible side effects, people died) but while I was on it I was strangely disconnected from my stomach...I went from 3 squares plus Snacks a day to eating a handful of grapes one day and just not caring about food. My kids sat and ate chocolate cake in front of me and It was like I was watching them brush their teeth or something...no cravings, no interest whatsoever!! Is that what it's like once the surgery is done and most of the grehlin is absent??

Yeah it is kinda like that for me. I am still very interested in food, but it is like a disconnect when it comes to eating it. I still like to look at all the cooking sites and even cook food, but I am only able to eat a few bites of anything. Which is a good thing and I don't have the desire to eat lush hi fat Desserts any more. So far anyways, lol, my surgery was July 10th.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
